25 years since I did one, not the bike.
However, being a man with a lot of tools and boundless self belief, I was about the change the oil yesterday, so I read the manual, and Mr Haynes, and they both say replace the washer on the sump plug - but they don't say what manner of washer it is - and I don't want to take the plug out until I have the replacement to hand.
Is this something I buy along with an oil filter? or fashion from the skin of a mermaid? or what?

Some filters come with them, but then again some don't. You can buy them for pennies from wemoto or ebay. It isnt always essential. I've done loads without replacing it. But it is a risk you take

You don't want to use mermaid skin , they are usually copper or fibre washers
