Not really a touring tale, but thought I would share it here anyway.
Today was a nice clear sunny morning so I and SWMBO decided to make the most of the weather and go for a little ride round the Lakes and enjoy the autumn colours.
Route as follows:-
From Kendal to Windermere, hang a right up through Troutbeck and over Kirkstone to Ullswater. Turn left over Matterdale End to join the A66 at the other Troutbeck, then down past Keswick.
Left at Braithwaite and up to the Whinlatter visitor centre for an excellent Cumberland sausage sandwich and a brew (and a warm up - hadn't realised how cold it was when we set out)
After putting more layers of clothing on (and the heated grips) continued down the other side of Whinlatter to Lorton, turn left down the valley and past Loweswater and then follow the back lanes through Lamplugh to Rowrah. By now we had left the sunshine behind us and it was overcast, misty, and cold for the boring bit through Cleator Moor, Egremont and Gosforth.
Turned left up over Corney Fell and the weather suddenly cleared as we got over the top - back to blue sky and sunshine. Back through Broughton, Grizebeck to Greenodd (a red Divvy caught us up and then peeled off at Gawthwaite - was it you?) and then thrashed back to Kendal on the A590.
120 miles round trip in a leisurely 4 hours including lunch stop. A mixture of roads with everything from back lanes with grass down the middle (and gravel on the bends) through mountain passes to sweeping A-roads. Beautiful scenery and lovely autumn colours.
Those of you who know this area can appreciate just how good this was, the rest of you will just have to take it on trust - I took my camera with me but unfortunately neglected to take any photos, so I may just have to do it all again next week!
