Hello again all,
The trip to Germany was tough, not least because i fell off outside Safron Waldon on a tight corner, panicking over some grit and mounting the verge at low speed. I grazed bike and elbow - though the panniers saved the bike from much damage. Fortunately a lorry, on-coming, stopped and driver and his mate helped me lift the bike back up. I was on my way after the spilt fuel settled down. (There was a vibration, which I later had sorted at the local garage here in Havixbeck).
I was happy to have my gloves put under the strap that was tightened over the seat to secure the bike on the Ferry; as the seat would not have withstood the digging from the webbing strap that is ratchetted down tight to secure the bike to the deck chain.
Another thing - I got lost at the Dutch border in Winterswijk, not knowing there signs strictly give the next village, rather than the major town Coesfeld as I had hoped. I was in and out of that place 5 times before I found my way into Germany! Have not had much biking here as rather busy - but the roads are pristine and potholes do not exist. "Strassen Schaden" means the patching tarmac is not of the original colour!
Too hot to do much riding and I have found some potholes. The give way to those on your right is fiercely defended that a moterist will not bother to check left before emerging (where you are not on a priority route). And the road trafic islands are but one lane in width around which it is impossible to exceed 10 mph.
Otherwize it's all well laid out, predictable and clean.
