I have got a xj600 1993 Lreg that has got very thirsty lately, checked spark plugs and they were black (sooty), i am getting roughly 120 before the reserve, mainly short journeys. I have noticed threads on here talking about tps and adjustment. there is a unit on rear of carb bank with a wire coming out from the front and a connector 3 inches from where it goes in, is this the wire you disconnect as i have done this and nothing happened even when i turned ignition on and connected it back up again. the rev counter did nothing, does this mean there is a problem with the tps or cant you do this to this year of model,,,,cheers also how easy is it to balance the carbs

TPS was introduced on '96 -on models so it wont be worth checking out. Carb balancing is easily done if you've the guages or have a home-made 'kit'. I ask to have mine checked when other tank off work is undertaken, valve shims for example, at the garage. Thirsty bike can mean wrist too flexible (7k + revs.)

Hi, when you say mainly short journeys, are you doing a lot of town riding? if so the stop/start whilst doing short journeys could increase your consumption, i have a d900, normal/short rides i will be on reserve by 120 miles, thats about 19 litres! if i do longer journeys i use less fuel. i can do 185 miles & still haven't hit reserve,so i think it possibly about right, but someone else will be along soon with some help,as they are very helpful here ;D.
I hope this helps to answer your question!

Sooty black plugs means rich mixture, so check that the chokes are returning fully to the off position. And check the plugs after a decent run (at least 25 miles of nice flowing open roads - you know you need an excuse!) to see if they're still sooty.

Depends on riding style, Carb settings, Air filter, is anything binding brake/wheel bearing wise. A multitude of possible contributing factors.

No-one's mentioned the chokes. Make sure they all move when the choke lever is pulled, plungers can stick open.
