hi folks weather getting better.anyhow my question is about taking off the centre stand. [ it needs degreasing and repainting] what is making me hesitate is the spring. it looks nasty and i can imagine a situation where i can get it off but cant get it on[could write a song with those lyrics] so am asking for any advice on this.ive got the paint zinc 182 and a tin of japlac black emery paper and wire brush plus artist brushes pack of 10 from pound shop.i intend to give it several coats. has any one done this to their bike and if so using what methods.i know springs of all types can go wrong and can be fierce.thanks

Take out one pivot bolt and put in a suitable screw driver. Now take out the other bolt and the screwdriver stops it flurting too far.
Put it back the same way with a thick screwdriver to align the opposite side bolt holes. The stepped bolts are almost impossible to fit any other way.
I did all that when I painted mine and 6 months later the paint was bubbling. Stove enamel seems to have been more successful and hardly any more costly than paint.

thanks i can see how that will work.i did not think of it .i had an image in my mind of frustratingly trying to pull the spring into position.thinking about it its a similiar principle to what steel erectors do when they use a toggle bar to get two holes aligned when putting up a steel structure.brilliant thanks .im going to try out my zinc primer and japlac black and see how it copes.

After polishing the metal bright with an angle grinder wire brush and using the same paints, mine lasted about 6 months before rust was coming through. A waste of efforts and not cheap on paint.
