looking for a buyers guide but search isnt showing anything, or i'm missing it picking this up for a friend tomorrow morning cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=180474765297is there a guide? if not what common faults do i need to check for on a 1998 XJ600N with 25k miles on it? obviously the usual, chain&sprocks, bearings, tyres, suspension etc but anythese models were prone too?

Hi Tony (and girlfriend) and welcome to the club.
No buying guide as such but this section more or less covers most problems that 600 owners come across every once in a while. If you ever hit anything not covered here just post a thread explaining problem and I am sure some one will come along to answer any questions you have.
The 600 is a good all rounder.

Clutch release bearing is lucky to get any oil so can wear out also the needle rollers on the release lever. Easy enough to fix. Oil from the engine breather - it furrs up with emulsion in cold weather. Sticking brakes. Exhaust has stainless downpipes but plain steel collectors and cans that rust from inside. Fairing plastics rattle. Mirror heads get loose and blow around in the wind. Vibes around 5000 revs are normal A few wiring faults mostly due to age so check the cable connectors. Seat lock can jam shut Nothing is serious and most is age related or wear & tear

General opinion goes with CD. Wiring passing the headstock is very tightly held and with the steering movement I've had wires break. Rear wheel bearings and on sprocket carrier too. No serious points at all, just use and w&t.

Just a suggestion ... If you go to this website, you can check the bike's MOT history, including any advisories. If there are any on the last MOT, it will give you a list of things to look at which is specific to that bike. You need a reference number off the bike's documents to access the record, so I suggest that you get the site on screen, then ring the seller and ask for the numbers. www.motinfo.gov.uk/

cheers guys, can access that site from the mobile so will check when i get there tomorrow morning its unfaired so easy to check the wiring
at what mileage is the first valve clearence check due? do they normally burn any oil (as most other yammies of that age seem to) ?
i will be advising her to register on here and invest in haynes book of lies

Check valves every 16,000 miles or 2 years.
They burn oil if the right hand gets too enthusiastic, but not excessively so (petrol too! ;D).
