On my XJ900 I sometimes get problems when the engine is wet. For instance if I go and jetwash the bike after I have finished and start her up for the first few miles there is a distinct spluttering from her as though some water has got into the system somewhere. I have also noticed (as happened to me the other day) that if the bike is left out over night and it rains I also get the same problem. It also happens if I am caught in heavy rain showers. Apart from spraying the spark plug heads with WD40 or duck oil does anyone know of a solution ? Or more to the point what the exact cause of it is ? I know she has 95,000 miles on the clock but I never used to suffer with this problem to the degree that I do now. Apart from her mileage she runs as sweet as a nut.

I'd look at the coils and HT leads as being (fairly) easy to get at and any damage letting in water should be easy to see.
Next time it happens see if one alternate pair of pipes are cooler than the other pair. This would indicate the coil being affected by water.

Get it wet at nightime, see if there's any arcing going on.

Insulation breaking down on the plug caps are another thing to check.
Definitely sounds like an HT type of problem somewhere in the system.

More than likely to be a bad connection where the HT leads fasten onto the plug caps. Take them off one at a time and give them a gentle tug, ooer missus!, the HT leads get brittle and can cause the sort of symptons your experiencing when damp.

I had this on a 900, I cured it by unscrewing each plug cap from the lead, cutting about 20mm off the lead and screwing them back on.
