Hi,
Would fitting a 120 65 17 change the bike's handling for the worse?
Std. fitting 120 70 17.
Any thoughts?

It'll make it slightly quicker turning at the expense of stability, although on a D9 you'll never notice the difference, methinks.Is it a Metz you're looking at ? Jools' bike comes with a 120/65 as standard, but there aren't that many about, so it usually gets a 120/70

Personally, I would only fit the manufacturers recommended sizes to the bike.
IF you were to be involved in a nasty, you COULD find your insurance is invalid due to some technicality, maybe.

Those vipers are excellent, although they don't last much longer than the rears at 3 - 3.5k - they still have tread left, but they wear funny and the front end gets a bit skittish.Might be a fair bit different on something as heavy as a divvy 9, though. Managed to pick up a Viper that has done 1800 miles 3mm left for £9.50. 120 70 17 to go on D9, got a Road Rider on rear at present & that feels everybit as good as the RA I use to have on.
So Viper might do another 1500/2000 miles or more & even with fitting cost should be worth while.
My RA front has done 7k now & is starting to look a little worn but not defunct. Should certainly be OK for Cornwall.

I had an RA on my 900 and loved it. But too much M-way commuting squared it off which ruined the handling.
Because it squared off so much, the last 1000 miles were unpleasant as it would skip when leaning from the flat worn tread onto the thicker mormal tread.
IMHO if you cant avoid doing lots of M-way miles the RA isnt a good choice. But if you don't its fab - really grippy and nice to use.
Mine was totally worn out and nasty at 5000 and not too nice from 4000.

What tyres to do you reccomend for M-ways then.
Most of my riding is/will be travelling to & from places asap with some twisty bits when there.

For motorways I would go for the longest lasting tyres (read cheapest) you can get - within reason. The middles will wear out PDQ and the handling will be stuffed regardless of the tyre's original quality. I've never had any straight line problems with any modern tyres**.
I have a BT020 on the front with Conti Force on the back. The 020 is ok but I think the Conti Road Attack suited me better. The Conti RA rear is great until it squares off so doing lots of M-way its not worth the extra cost. Ditto the BT 020.
The Maxxis tyres on offer makes lots of sense. Shame - I'd just fitted new tyres when I saw the advert.
**Michelin Macadams excepted they were truely horrible on the Divvie 600 - put me off the brand for ever. They were slightly longer lasting but not worth the death wish (lack of) grip.

I've just bought a front Maxxis for the D9 following info. on the Forum. Seems to be as good if not better than a Conti Ra which I have on at the moment.
Looks like I can get one from internet delivered & ride in fitted for less than a RA.
Now just have to see how the Road Rider on the back lasts.

I've not been too clear...
The squaring off applies to the rear tyre. Even with lots of M-way miles, the front always seems to go on the shoulders before the centreline is worn out. So a sticky front isnt such a bad idea even if a sticky rear isnt worth the extra cost.
As said if M-ways were not my thing I'd go for grippy tyres all round.
Come september I'll be ready for a pair of Maxxis.
