At what mileage did you all need to replace your headers/collector box at? I saw a D9 here in Ireland with very low mileage on it, but I have no way of verifying it's the true mileage. There's a motad system on it, so I'm wondering would it have needed replacing that soon.

I got my 900 at the end of Jan this year with only 8,100 miles on a 1998 S reg. It had been stored for a few years off the road with no mot, went to clean it and the collector box clamps with the down pipes were rusted through along the with ends of the cans with the collector so replaced it with a full Motad system. First I did buy a full Delkevic system which I sent back after I could not get it to fit and even my local dealer could not do it.

Mine is a 1997 R reg. Last year I replaced the downpipes and collector with Delkevics (from Sandy Bikes) which fitted with no problems. The collector was rusty but the downpipes were actually perfectly good (I might sell them). I didn't want to do the job twice so bought the pipes and box. Its still got the original cans.
Ireland isnt noted for its warm dry climate so I guess the original pipes rotted from the inside out.

This one has 12k miles on it, but since al says he had to replace his at 8k it shouldn't be too bad. now all i have to do is get a realistic price from him.

Perhaps he did lots of short runs so the trapped moisture never got boiled off. My cans are now going - just like the collector its the clamped areas that are failing/rusting up. They get so hot I cant imagine much salt gets into there. But after 12 years I shouldnt moan too much.
Mine cost £1250 two years ago. It had a wing rack, was in average condition with no actual damage and showing 32K miles. In the current market the same bike should be worth less now, but then the D9 is a sensible sort of bike. It just might hold its price when all the crotch rockets have bottomed out.

surely someone somewhere out in mega-webby land knows someone that makes the 'weak-link' shitey steel collector section out of stainless?, I have same prob, near perfect downpipes, near perfect cans and the feckin bean can collector section nearly rotten thru. , if someone not makin them yet why not ?, also when will someone invent a device that can nicely round off your squared (but tready) tyre ?, its a disgrace !

D9s do seem to square rear tyres more than some other bikes and scrub the front shoulders. But they also do corners lots better than many expect. Mine is quite capable of surprising the sunday sports bike brigade.
Sandy Bike Spares sell Delkevic stainless collectors (along with down pipes and cans if you want the full set). Note how the originals come off so you can work out which pipe goes where.

a '98 bike, I replaced the whole lot at 60,054Km.
Too many variables to get a decent answer. Probably a combination of age, mileage, where and when it's ridden, and how it was garaged, or indeed cleaned?

I'm looking at getting some Delkevic stubbys 355mm cans for my D9, what is the difference between them & the longer cans at 430mm apart from the obvious 75mm
