Hmm, things began to look ominous when the Haynes manual mentioned "restricted access" then comments about removing the fairing Right PITA, but my twopennorth for you. It's easier if you work from in front of the bike, going in from under the fairing.

It's easier if you work from in front of the bike, going in from under the fairing. It's easier if you just whip the fuel tank off, gives you more access

It's even eaiser going to your local Yamaha dealer, buying the bulb from them and asking them to fit it. I've done this at least 6 times, ( always phone in advance). These mechanics are good, under 1min , yes under 1 min, to fit thw new bulb. I've seen them do it.
Of course I would have a go myself , but I've got sauasage fingers! dxtans

Fairing off? Good lord, that's extreme.
I recently changed to a Xenon 90% brighter bulb (which is very good and a great improvement) and at a first attempt it took me about five minutes.
I found that access was easiest from the front left of the fairing (when stood at the front looking back along the bike).
Disposable latex gloves might save some skin if you have large hands though!

My bulb quite suddenly began to droop in the holder so the full beam is now about 20ft in front of the bike. The bike is laid up for the winter so no big deal, but I could not - no way - get at the bulb to see if its simply fallen out of its mounting. When the weather improves, I'll try the fuel tank idea, but I'm not overly hopeful.
Here's hoping the lamp isnt falling apart.
