Hi all, just joined up and was after some advice re the dreaded oil cooler leak,I've got a '95 with 77k and still going strong,it has developed a leak where the pipe joins the cooler despite several attempts using various washers etc it seems there maybe a hairline crack,as these coolers seem to be rare 2nd hand is there any other yamaha coolers that fit? or can be adapted to do so,I notice FZR 1000 are plentiful as are FJ1200 also they are fairly cheap seen some for £35,any advice most welcome, thanks

You really have to take the plunge and try one. I fitted a cooler from a GSX750F to my 600 divvy - the cooler unions had slightly different threads but I wound them in as if I was cutting a new thread and they were fine and oil-tight until I sold it. Mounted it with cable ties...

Hi I had the same problem and found the only cure was a new one, and at £167.00 turned out to b a bit hard on the pocket, then found out a week later that i had to replace one of the feed pipes, again at £90.00 each, so looks like it will b the same for u my friend. Good luck .

When they go like that, a replacement is the only answer, and it's worthwhile doing the hoses at the same time. If your fitting the cooler yourself be very careful tightening the pipes at the cooler end, use a two spanners, one on the cooler hex fitting to take the load. If you don't, you stand a good chance of cracking the fitting to cooler connection. Some Suzuki coolers have flanges and bolts which I think is a better way of doing it.

Unless a cheap good second hand D9 oil rad turns up you might be best with an aftermarket oil cooler and thermostat. My 900 is (was? last time I looked) oil tight but the wiggly copper foils between the cooler tubes have all flattened off and they snap off entirely if I try to straighten them. So the cooler must be well below its "design" performance. Other used coolers are likely to be just as bad.
