My fuel light usually comes on at about 200 miles, bike averages about 50mpg. I don't have the manual here at the mo' so can't remember the size of the tank, but I seem to think that there is more than one gallon left?
Have any of you ran the tank dry, and what was the range. Short of carrying a gallon of petrol in the top box, I'd rather ask. Is all the petrol actually available for use? might sound a stupid question but it is documented that my BMW 1150GS can run out of fuel, yet if dropped down on one side it will run a few more miles.

The original Yamaha manual says fuel capacity is 24 litres including a reserve of 5 litres. It has a level base so I think you could pretty much run it dry.
Mine goes about 180 miles (18 litres) and hits reserve. I've had it to 220 miles and put in 21 litres and there was still quite a lot sloshing around in the tank. Always chickened out after that.
I did the brass tube mod on my fuel gauge sender unit (see tech section) to sort out the "standard" pivot wear problem. IMHO the D900 fuel gauge is a seriously rubbish piece of kit.

IMHO the D900 fuel gauge is a seriously rubbish piece of kit. I agree, mine stays on full so you think youre doing about 100mpg, then plummets from half to empty like a brick off a cliff.

If you think of the gauge as merely a guide then you'll be fine. Mine's like CD's ... anything from 170 to 200 miles to the light, and refill then means 18 litres going in.

Beg to differ. It works from 2/3 to 1/3 then shouts at you with the warning light at 1/4. So you think its about to run dry when you really have a good 60 miles worth in the tank.
Just when you need it most its been showing empty for ages.
Edit. The float arm/wire perhaps could be bent to match the low fuel warning light (which works even if the arm is removed). But it still tells you the tank getting close to empty with 6 litres remaining in the tank.

perhaps I'll run it dry one day, perhaps.

My theory is that fuel low warning lights / flashing symbols etc. are calculated to get you at least to the next motorway / autobahn / autopista etc. service area. In some countries they are not as frequent as in our little overcrowded island, hence the need for 50-odd miles after it comes on.

If the 600 had a "6 litre left in the tank" warning lamp you'd be filling up with 11 litres each time. The low gauge should indicate the tank is at 1/4 full, but the light should be when you have 20 miles or so. A "last chance" light like my mother's car.

Can't ride the bike for a fortnight, just had a hernia op. and I was told that to ride will invalidate the insurance! Notthat I could actually ride it at the moment anyway

There's enough space under a Divvie fuel tank (either of them) for at least another 5 litres. One day someone might make a separate reserve tank just for the job.
