Hi Steve I'm sure you'll enjoy your trip and it sounds like you're going well prepared. It will take 20 miles or so to get used to riding on the right and the first few roundabouts will seem odd but you'll quickly adjust. I'm doing a similar trip on June 14th down to Biarritz via the Tunnel (about half of your journey to Southern Spain) but I'll use mostly autoroutes as I want to get there in a single day. I don't know if you've seen this thread but there is some useful info here about people's experiences in France: diversionclub.proboards74.com/index.cgi?board=touringtales&action=display&thread=3803You mentioned stopping overnight in one of the F1 places. They are very cheap but not very pleasant - everything in the rooms is plastic and awful. You'll pass lots of small hotels and pensions close to the N roads which are also cheap and won't be very busy in June. You'll get a more comfortable room and a proper French breakfast which is well worth a couple of Euros extra. Hope you have a great trip

You do'nt say which route you're using, or where in southern Spain you are heading The A16/A28 etc down to Biarritz that Paul mentions in his post is a good route fast route, but a lot of it is Toll roads,
Alternatively you could go down to Dijon/Lyon/Perpignan and cross into Spain there. Which will put you on the coast road down to the south Costa's. I have used both routes to Spain on Div 900's and I prefer the Dijon route.
As Paul said the Formule 1 motels are basic, and you will not get as much of the flavour of France or Spain using them. But they are convenient and may suit you until you are familiar with your travelling abroad.
You will be surprised how quickly you will become used to riding abroad. When you get back you will be a Euro riding expert.
Good luck. Enjoy your tour. And welcome to the YDC.

We did Northern Spain and France last year. Cheated though took the ferry Plymouth to Santander and rode back up. Tried to stay off the Motorways apart from one fairly long day up the N10 Motorway from San Sebastian through Bordeaux through to Saintes. D roads from there up to Caen. Roads Ok but a lot of trucks on the Mway out of Spain
Not a fan of the Formula 1 but we have stayed in the Ibis/Campanilles and they were ok. Not too expensive.
Have a good one
