Hey, Me and my mate are planning to spend 3 weeks going around western europe in the summer on our xj600, we plan on camping all the way to, (nice and cheap, like us). Could anyonegive us some advice on what sort of luggage to take hard/soft etc and what gear to take apart fom the obvious. we'd prefer something that we can lock to the bike so we can spend time wondering round on foot.
Thanks for any help RYan

Toured once with soft luggage and swore I would never use it again. For security reasons alone I would go for the hard stuff, it's a lot easier to use as well

Soft luggage is fine to use. Stick it in the tent when pitched up and use a small padlock on the tents zips. When you stop for a meal/pee and want to wander then ensure one of the mounting straps goes under the seat.
Saying that I have left my bike with soft luggage on it outside loads of watering holes in France and Spain and never had a problem. With 2 of you going it should be easy to keep an eye on it.
In this Section: Touring Tales, there is an excellent post from ade19650 a bit earlier titled 'First Time Touring in Europe' or something like that.
Read it, it's excellent. The biggest problem with going abroad for the first time is worrying about it! Just do it! It's really easy. And your soft luggage will be fine.

When I toured with soft luggage I padlocked the bottom of the pannier to the pillion foot hanger, probably not much good if you've got a pillion. It also gives more stability to the luggage when riding.
Of course you have to padlock the zips closed too. Won't stop a determined scrote but will slow them up enough to think about it.
