Hi all,
Anyone looking for a stainless steel collecotr box for a 4 into 2 900 exhaust. I have had a quote for £117.00 inclusive. I am tempted as I will need one. Does anyone else know a better price supplier? This is from a firm called OSMC.
cheers

Hi Miscy
Did you get the Collector Box ?
If you did and its OK, would you let me have the contact details for the Company you got it from, I have a good idea mine is going to have to be replaced by the time we get back from our Hols.............
Many Thanks
Colin

That sounds like a very good price to me!
I paid around that from my bike shop who are very good at getting pattern parts at good prices.

From: rusticpeg Sent: 23/07/2004
Bump yerself daftdivi lol, see the thread from nobr on 900 exhaust wanted.
briefly, I did not get the ss box. I found a box and downpipes system on ebay for £190 all in. Motad system with 2 year guarantee only was £300 from Yamahe dealer with fitting and gaskkest etc would have come in at over £500. SHOCKER
If my downies were not so tatt I would have risked the ss box from osmc. Will post pics of the box and dwonies when i et them off the bike, if anyone wants to see the B4 and after pics.
good luck briefly

miscy69 I tried them for a 4-1 for my XJ 600.... they eventually quoted me £500+ but I would get a 10 year guarantee!!! thought the idea of stainless steel was it never rots???
Or am I wrong??
From: gurninman Sent: 17/08/2004
Depends on the grade of stainless, and the environment it's being used in.....
From: rusticpeg Sent: 19/08/2004
Correct me if I am wrong, wouldn't be the first and won't be the last time I am sure.
I thought stainless steel was only totally stainless if both surfaces were treated. So the inside of the collector box and the outside would need to be stainless steel or the inner face will rot if not treated?
Makes sense to me when I think about it?
Am I right or am I on another planet?

Does anyone have the address of the company, I might be close enough to collect.
From: gurninman Sent: 23/08/2004
Stainless steel isn't made with a surface treatment - that's galvanised.
Stainless is made by adding different elements to steel to promote corrosion resistance.Cheap stainless parts are commonly made from 304 grade, with 316 being widely used also (316 is a slightly higher grade than 304).
These are commonly referred to as 18-8 stainless steel (18% chrome, 8% nickel).
Corrosion resistance is broadly similar, but small differences in chemical composition make different grades more resistant to certain chemicals / environments..
Stainless steel is not a wonder material - it does corrode when exposed to agressiveconditions (british winters/salt).Most manufacturers that offer a 'lifetime'guarantee know full well that the vehicle is unlikely to be with the same owner for more than ten years, so they're pretty safe.
At least OSMC are being honest in 'only' offering a 10 year guarantee.

I picked my collector box up on Friday from OS Stainless Exhausts (i.e. OSMC). It was in stock on the shelf and cost me £110.00. Looks like a nice piece of work, but I am not really a good judge of such things, and I have the 10 year guarantee in my hand as I type.

www.osmc.co.uk The little factory thingy took a bit of finding. Eventually the guy came out and fetched me from a nearby roundabout! He really seems to enjoy his work. He reckons the box is such a good fit that it won't need clamps on the front pipes. It's being fitted on Thursday (didn't fancy doing it myself - sheared studs etc. fill me with dread) so I'll let you know how it goes.

Collector box fitted. Perfect fit!! Only problem was that the necks dropped off the silencers when the clamps were released
Clever mechanic has a friend who is a blacksmith - you don't get many of those these days - and he welded new necks on. One has not sealed correctly to the box and will have to be done again and there is a slight blow from a front pipe but I haven't worked out which one yet.
The saga will continue.

Nice one Ed
Sounds like it is all going back together (sort of) well ?
You will have to post some photo's to show us what it all looks like (all bright and Sparkling ).

Glad to see someone got some benefit from this thread.
I settled for a standard box and downpipes off a low mileage 900 via e-bay and treated it with VHT paint. ust as well as the downpipes disintegrated when taken off the bike.
One thing to know about is that the box is shaped in such a way that water can collect on it when you finally come to stop and put the bike on the stand. The webbing metal between the pipes collects the water in a pool. It might be worth considering drilling some drainage holes in that webbing area to allow it to drain. IMHO.
would lke to see a pic if you can post one?

Go on Miscy I'll be daft and ask what's VHT paint and what does it do??
From: Tour_De_Mark Sent: 31/08/2004
Very High Temperature?
From: rusticpeg Sent: 31/08/2004
to Tour de Mark. It is indeed very high temperature paint.

i have a spare set of 900 diversion downpipes, their not perfect, with a few rust pits, though mostly where it is hidden, but they are in servicable condition and strong where they connect to the collector box, bought with a stainless collector box of ebay, but my old ones are better, any offers
