Since I've had the bike the switch was always a bit stiff when using the steering lock. Tonight after I had parked up, I couldn't turn the switch to the ignition position I've sprayed it with contact cleaner & WD40, it is working, but now that the seeds of doubt have been set, I'll need to consider replacing it. Any particular difficulties with this? Busters or M and P would seem the cheapest place to get a new switch from.

Mine did this on and off, but a regular spray of WD40 and a on-off-on-off turn of the key a few times kept any further problems at bay.
Maybe worth checking that your key hasn't got slightly bent also, I managed to bend mine on the Fazer, and every now and then it causes a problem

Sounds a better bet than replacing it. ;D I'll spend a few days blowing it through with the WD40 then.

Thanks for that, ( just read & replied to the link)I'd forgotten that I've got a can of brake cleaner, I'll blast that through the switch, then do the silicone spray jobbie. Who makes this silicone spray then?

The ignition switch on my 900 has always been fiddly to turn on - you have to push the key forward as you turn it. It took me a while to figure this out after I got the bike, after trying all the usual things like WD40 etc., which didn't seem to have any effect. The guy who did the last MoT said it was a common problem on all Yamahas with this type of switch when they've done a fair bit of work.

Best to avoid hanging a bunch of keys on the ignition key. I use a small carabena type thingy I got from Wickes for £1.50. Simply unclip the ignition key. It also avoids a scratched top triple clamp.

I find mine needs the "push forward a little" technique to go from OFF to ON. ;D

I wouldnt bother with the steering lock. If some b'stard decides to knick the bike the first thing they'll do is try to wrench the steering straight and break or mangle the lock.
