On the French Run I used the Newhaven - Dieppe channel crossing. The reception and service provided for bikers was excellent. As we rolled onto the ferry Uk & France we were met by friendly staff waiting to strap our bikes down and chock them . The boat was the M/V. Cote D Albatre Ron

P&O Dover-Calais now make you strap your own bike down - very offhand deckhand tells you it's your responsibility, points to a collection of manky old straps hanging up in the corner and promptly disappears. All very well for a seasoned traveller but not much fun if it's your first time.
Seafrance's newer Ferries have a neat system where you ride the bike into a channel (not the English one, obviously) and they strap it down on both sides. There are only 6 of these docks per boat, though. Backing out can be interesting, unless you have a 'Wing, in which case you just stick it in reverse.
