Is a 1992 pre diversion xj 900 engine a practical install in a 1995 diversion. ?

I think the pre divvy XJ900 was chain drive so is not compatible with the divvys shaft drive

It’s definitely shaft drive. But whether one would squeeze into a D9 frame?? I think you’d have to expect to make brackets for the engine mounts - I doubt any would line up naturally.
I know where there is an xj900 old engine. I’ll see if the owner will let me take some measurements. The most important being whether the xj motor is actually longer than the Divvy one, in which case I think it’d be a strong no-go.
But the best option for an engine swap is obviously another D9 motor.
I’ll update if I can get my tape measure on the xj engine!

Thanks all. I have three pre diversion xj900 engines one running and a pre diversion frame no reg or log book. I have a frame local for a diversion with reg etc. I want a project i can use as a runner so i was thinking of a mongrel. Thats if i can practically match the two together, without war and peace. What size is the diversion engine, and mounting flange positions etc, I have the xj900 engine or frame i could draw comparisons from.

Well, I don’t need to measure a xj900 motor then 🙂.
Alas, I currently have no D9 to measure.
But as projects go, your idea seems quite “adventurous” ! Aside from the engine question, you’d need Divvy carbs & airbox, the wiring harness will be different, along with electrical components.
...... I’m sounding like a party pooper now so I’d better stop 😀.

From a quick look at a 97 900 diversion, parked in bridlingonn this morning, (kind owner tolerated my measuring ). Engine looks a fit with little if any fabrication. The rear twin shock swinging arm, looks like a fit too. Upper shock mounts and some bracing perhaps would se a twin shock diversion/pre diversion mongrel well underway. I get the feeling the diversion engine is angled slightly forward but not sure at this stage. I am going for the build, its not like the original xj900 is exactly complete. But it is running and i have good carbs airbox off the 31A etc. Needless to say this bike will be minimalist in nature, but that is what i originally wanted anyway. Exhausts look about the biggest headache, after the rear shock mount fabrication. Its going to fill all those long winter nights i imagine.
