Hello,
I have not ridden my XJ900 for about 4 weeks and when I used it last thursday I got about a mile from my house and it just died, no sign it was going to just silence! I pulled in the clutch and coasted to side of the road. I have several bikes and restore a few so I know a bit about them but mainly older bikes with no electronics etc so I went thorough my trouble shooting. Did I have petrol - Yes. Had I knocked the kill switch - No. Could I smell any burning - No. Turned the ignition off and turned it on and I noticed the neutral light was not on so I checked if it was in gear and it was not. I got off the bike, took the key out, looked around it, put the key back in and turned it and the ignition light came on so I attempted to start the bike and she fired up. That's weird I thought so I drove the bike a little further and then filled with fuel and drove back home no issues.
Saturday morning time for work 10 miles away, started first time and got to work no problem. Coming home no problem but as I pulled up outside my house she went dead again, now I may have put the side stand down but I cant remember as its an automatic thing you do when getting off the bike but again when I put it in neutral nothing happened, no green light! I fiddled with the ignition and kill switch and could not get light on so I could fire her up so I got off the bike and went in the house. 30mins later when I was taking the dog out I took my bike key with me, put it in the ignition and neutral light came on and she started. So I have some form of intermittent electrical fault and I am going to start with the side stand but that does not stop your neutral light illuminating as far as I am aware?
Has anyone a had any similar issues? Is it more ignition related as everything is dead? Any advice appreciated
