At the start of the year I bought a triked XJ900 shaft drive. It's been running fine but the last couple of outings on essential errands (I hasten to add) I've had problems getting down the gears from 4 to 3 to 2 to 1 and finding neutral. I don't know if it's clutch. gearbox or both. I'd welcome any suggestions. It's decades since I last worked on a bike. Oh, and it's a 1989. Thank You.

My first point would be to check that the clutch lever is working OK? It could be that the clutch cable is snagged or pinched somehow? Or, the cable in the sleeve needs to be lubed. It will also be worth having a look at the clutch activation arm on the clutch housing to make sure it is functioning correctly when you pull in the level on the handlebar.

Hopefully the clutch is the issue - if you haven't changed the engine oil recently, worth doing as that can affect the clutch operation - might just be sticky clutch plates. If no joy, then try cleaning the clutch plates - & checking they are still in spec when you inspect them.
I can't add much else to this, except that if the clutch can be ruled out, I'd be thinking of the gear selector forks. That's a lot more work, so hopefully not.
