Hi just wondering if anyone can advise on how to go about wiring in a relay for the headlamp aiming to improve its overall brightness? Be great to hear from someone who’s done this as I find the lack of illumination I’m getting at night a real limitation.

Not sure a relay will improve brightness on its own, as a relay is just a heavy duty switch in essence. The use of a relay is suited when you upgrade your existing 55/60w bulb to a 80/100w.
The main issue with the 900 diversion is the headlamp lens design, but maybe changing the bulb to an 80/100w could help a bit.
Some opt for an HID conversion, but these can make the light scatter and be of little rider benefit.

Hi thought the idea was to prevent current drain and voltage drop through the wiring by having a system that draws more directly from the battery bypassing loss in the loom. In using the relay the condition of the switch contacts etc becomes unimportant as most of the current goes via the relay. I found a little H4 relayed wiring harness with a ceramic bulb connector on Ebay, hopefully should be able to adapt it.

Well I fitted the relay harness to the bike. Only thing is its for a car with twin headlamp so has a 'spare' headlamp socket but maybe that will be useful in future. I cleaned up several pretty poor connections and fitted some new connector blocks from the switch wiring where before I'd had some corroded old chocolate block screw to connects, which was probably part of the issue - though I did feel I was getting a noticeably stronger beam through the relay. Decided I'd might as well make the most of the ceramic bulb holder though and stuck an 80-100w bulb in - the light I have now is simply amazing compared to what it was, feels like you can ride down unlit country roads late at night with very little need to slow down almost like daytime riding. Lights up more than enough detail in the road now, particularly on high beam. I felt I had to do something as it was plain embarassing riding at night on holiday recently down in Cornwall being overtaken by all and sundry simply as I couldn't see enough of the road to maintain a decent speed. Well worth doing.

That's good to know.
If anyone is contemplating a similar mod, I think I have a couple of 80/100W H4 bulbs in the shed.
