Hello not sure I am in the right board here but no doubt someone will tell me, I have just got a 97 900s diversion it seems in great shape but after my first couple of decent distance runs I seem to have a fine mist of engine oil on my right footpeg and my right boot with some drifting back to the silencer.
It does not seem a lot but concerned that it may get worse? I first thought cause was too much oil but would like a second or third opinion about what to do? thanks in advance, sparky

Have a look around the oil cooler, could have a little hole in it. Make sure the filled cap is on. Give it a good clean then take it out stopping every so often to try and locate it.

Hi Sparky. I am sure oil will be coming from either the oil cooler banjo bolt or maybe the pipes from oil filter housing up to the oil cooler. These are a common problem on the D9.
On one occasion after the garage had checked the valve clearences I had a similar leak. They had missed one the seals around the camcover bolts.
Good luck with it & let us know how you go on.

Thanks for the tips definitely not oil filler cap had to use pliers to open to check all was well in casing, will look at oil cooler but from memory it all seemed dry and must have been replaced at some stage, I am going to siphon out a little oil and see if overfilling might be cause sight glass is not very clear, but wondering where the oil would come from if that was the case, all good fun this biking game!

Its not from the drain plug seal not sealing?

Its not from the drain plug seal not sealing? No it's right tightness and dry as is filter housing. I am more convinved it is blowing out breather or drain hose. When the mini beast from the east passes I will take it to mechanic just to be sure.

My first thought reading your OP description was that it is blowing out of somewhere, rather than just oozing or dripping.
Have a good clean up and then have a ride with regular short stops to see where it first appears.

I have located the leak it is coming from a "bung" I don't know the part name just below the clutch cover, it has a hex key indentation to loosen it. I am going to leave well alone till I get friend who is a bike mechanic to have a look at, I would post a picture but I have no idea how to, at least I know where the problem is and though it's cold over here but it is great dry, sunny biking weather and oil or no oil I am enjoying it!

Hope I get these photos up, www.flickr.com/photos/157027493@N06/? should show bung with hex and oil seeping out from bottom. My mate says it's an easy fix but unusual probably comes from me dropping it first time out, and it not even moving, there should be an age limit for Divi owners or leg extensions on the NHS.

I dropped mine twice in the garden ,(neither my fault honest, brake binding probs)a sod to get up a second time, specially with a heart condition,I had help after falling off both my Ape Futura and Cagiva 1000s after as some say running out of talent out of Nuneaton)thats why I sold the 900s having dealt with the return valve compensator and found it silky smooth on a run, but had/have too many bikes. Yours looks a lovely clean bike and good that you have pinpointed the leak.

Hi Sparky. I am not sure what the hex cap thing is or does, but as far as I know it's not a common problem. Any oil leaks on the D9 are usually associated with the cooler, pipes and age of course. So please keep in touch, and let us know how your leak pans out. ATB PS - Like Gav said that bike looks in brilliant condition. There is a guy, in Yorkshire I think, who rebuilds XJ900s's to as new spec. Yours looks like one of his .

Hello Spike yes it is one of Dean's I bought it last year hope he doesn't read this and see how I am abusing it! Nah - take the moral high ground - go over to see him, and stomp in looking angry and say "What are you going to do about this?" On the other hand, perhaps just give him a call and ask what that hex bung actually does.

Lesson 1. Never say anything is an easy fix. Seemingly this Hex bolt/bung is for inserting a Yamaha factory tool for measuring oil pressure and can not just be sealed up with the usual "any sticky stuff". If there is any contaminate at all it would go to direct to the oil pump and all sorts of nasties could result, my friend being a mechanic of experience however had the skill to clean the inside and file away a casting imperfection which was not helping the seal and apply some weird and wonderful type of sealant and a seal so hopefully the oil will cease flowing, so far so good will know better at the weekend if I get out a run.
Lesson 2. Remember lesson 1, and always seek the advice of someone with more knowledge than you, there's a Blackadder/Baldrick line there somewhere but it doesn't come to my Baldrick like mind

Aye - but don't forget you called here first, and hopefully you have found out we not a bad bunch on here - even if we don't know all the answers.
Hope its sorted now - and please call back. All the best.
