I recently bought a TomTom Rider. Yes I find it very useful especially in built up areas when its easy to get lost. But I think it is essential to have the latest Map to keep abreast with all the new roads that are built. Having just bought my TTR 3 weeks ago I have learnt that TomTom have just released the new 2006 map for the UK. But I (and presumably other customers in a similar situation) are not allowed to have a free update to the UK 2006 map. I have spoken to TomTom customer Relations and they are hopeless. I did notice on TomToms website under the "NEWS" Section a press release from the 28 November 2006 regarding the new map releases and here is an exceprt: "The new maps contain the most up to date information on the market and are ideal for customers who purchased a TomTom device anytime before April 2006 or users who are looking to add a new map". Now that statement there says to me that anyone who purchased a TomTom SatNav device after April this year should indeed have either the lastest map supplied with the unit or be entitled to update their map to the latest version. Furthermore a point that does really get on my wick is the fact that the new 2006 Map for the UK is part and parcel of the Western Europe map and according to TomTom you cannot get the UK Map seperately, despite the fact that when you buy the device it comes solely with the UK Map (And yes I am aware that you can buy the European version of the device, but theres no point in doing that unless you are going to travel around Western Europe). After speaking to Halfords about all this mess they contacted TomTom, and I learnt something else which I thought was rather interesting. TomTom informed Halfords that even the new TomTom Rider devices that are currently being manufactured will still only go out with the 2005 UK software map on it. So according to TomTom then new devices turing up next year, 2007, will have software on it that is almost 2 years old and that to get the lastest software from them its going to cost you a minimum of an extra £70 (thats the cost of downloading the map and buying a new SD Card). An absoulte rip off! I have written to TomTom Customer support now to see if I can get any joy from them but I dont hold out much hope.

From earlier thread, post 17. Looks like ContourMac was right.

What you do have to be careful of is the fact that when you connect your TomTom device through your computer it may check for updates of the TomTom software, but this does NOT include Map Software updates. The maps are entirely seperate to the rest of the TomTom software. I've updated my TTR for the latest software, but as I said this doesn't include the Maps. And as I said in my earlier post TomTom have got no intention of shipping the new updated map with the new stock that they will be sending out now that they have released the new 2006 Maps.

Know where you're coming from Tony. Is a bit sh**y that Tom tom won't be issuing the new maps to registered users.
I know it's not the answer but there are other ways to update the maps (either downloads or DVD's), and the rate at which we build new roads in this country mean the present maps won't be too outdated.

And you will need a 1gb SD card , (at least), to download it onto!

Most sat nav devices use maps from one of several sources, Navteq and .... (can't remember). Unfortunately, the contracts for mapping and 're-mapping' are a big problem, as in TT dont want to have to pay for them, hence why if you want an updated map, you'll have to pay for it.
Incidently, its been a common problem that most Sat nav mapping companies are woefully out of date with the maps... in fact most dont have the M6 toll which has been open for 2 years? Also if your local town has re-defined it's layout in the last few years....ie one-way systems... dont expect these to be updated for quite a while either...
However, there are a few 'decent' mapping companies out there, however, as in all things, you only get what you pay for...
recent quote in a mag i read, think it was Garmin ...
"So... the Sat Nav comes with full Uk maps?"
"Of course"
"Uptodate?"
"At the time of release yes.."
However, the ToR is typically back in 2005, though the item may not have been available before 2006, the software was licensed and released back in 2005... a nifty way around it.

I have found out yesterday that a UK & Ireland map can be ordered for the TomTom Rider. There are 2 ways of doing this. firstly go to TomToms website and when its asks what device you have selct a TomTom Go 300. It will then give you the UK & Ireland map currently priced at €47.96 (approx £33.00). The other way is to go into TomTom Home, which is the application you download to your computer to manage all your settings and programs etc that ate on your TTR, and on the left hand side it says buy new maps. Click on that and it will show the UK & Ireland map and you can order and download it from there. One handy thing about ordering it through TomTom home is that it notes your device number, so if there should be any problems with it not working you have that point to throw back at TomTom. Its approx a 256mb download, and they recommend using a 512mb card. Which again still means you have to buy a new card but at least not quite as expensive as a 1gb or 2gb card. I have written a letter of complaint to TomTom which has to be sent via snail mail to their Amsterdam office. I find this most annoying as they tell you once they have received your letter of complaint they will then reply to you via email ! I haven't as yet bought the new UK & Ireland map as im waiting to see what TomTom have to say for themselves.

Well, just a couple of days ago I contacted TomTom again to find out if they had received my complaint and was informed that they had and it had already been dealt with. They added to my online TomTom account a FREE UK & Ireland Map for me to download, which I duly did. So I have at least got a their new map from them free of charge, although I didnt receive one word of apology or explaination from them. I did notice however that in the "NEWS" section of the TT website that the article from the 28th Nov last year has been removed, although it hasnt been totally removed from their servers as the original URL for it still works (I kept a note of it). This was the article that implied that their new maps were designed for customers who bought their TT devices before April 2006 (I bought my TTR in Nov 2006). So if you do physically write into them in Hollland you may get something as I did.
