Hi all,
Me and a few mates are off to France in April and though I have a car GPS (tomtom go 710) I am far too stingy to buy a TomTom rider or similar.
Has anyone ever done this, I'm confident enough to make a bracket and fit it but would the vibes (of which there are many) kill the unit? Or as I suspect would it vibrate loose? Solutions please.
Further would it be OK in a Tank Bag ( the clear bit on the top of course) though the ergonomics of looking down to view are not too clever I suppose!
Any thoughts folks?
Thanks Cheeeeesy!

Is it waterproof ? Ideally you need it to be if you are going to mount it.
Does it have an ear piece ? This would make it easier if it is in your tank bag.
Regards
Dave ;D

It's something worth thinking about certainly. I see 2 immediate problems that you have identified.
1) Vibration
2) Earphone
The vibration would have to be tackled in the mount you use obviously, but I think 1/2" thick rubber sheet, the type electricians use as an insulation mat should suffice, together with ali sheet to make a kinda anti-vibe sandwich mount.
The earphone I think is important on a bike. You cannot afford to continually take your eyes off of the road! Question: Does your TomTom have a connection for a small in-ear device? If not you're snookered.
I went the other route. Bought a cheap £100 RAC200 Sat Nave for the car (excellent for the price) and a TomTom Rider v2 for the bike.

I'm amazed that EL B hasn't been along to suggest buying a map yet Dave ;D

The vibration with a bar mount damaged my Tomtom rider (1) bracket. Turns out to be a known fault and supposed to be remedied on new version. My replacement bracket looks the same as the old one. Before Tomtom I used a Garmin Etrex in the map pocket of my tank bag, worked fine and it will stop vibs. Downside is it's further away from your line of sight and may be affected more by sunshine.

I have used my tomtom one in my tankbag, trouble is, you have to take your eyes off the road for way too long because if the sun is out, you can't see the display too well.
Bit too dangerous in reality, have thought about a pushbike mount but Im sure a large bump would send the thing flying down the road

Hello all Thanks for the feedback, reckon I will have to break the habit of a lifetime and buy a proper dedicated bike unit. the Go710 doesn't have an earpeice so in the great scheme of things may not be ideal!!! Suppose its better to arrive alive and get lost along the way!! ;D On a different subject I took my Divvy out of winter hibernation today and was almost knocked off by an innatentive driver within TWO minutes!! Is this a record? Seriously thanks for the feedback and advice. Best Wishes Cheeeeeeesy
