I've got a new 4-2-1 system from Black Widow sitting here and looked at the studs on the old system...how the flip do you get a socket into the studs on the middle pipes? Pulled up the Haynes section and (predictably) it was hopeless. Any tips? Thanks

Hi Mawsley, A long-reach 8mm allen key will slip right in there:

Eh up Martin - what are those shiny things where most people have the downpipes?

Thank you Actually sussed that one this afternoon - as I rounded one of the nuts...the one behind the frame tube! Fortunately a mate came round with kit to drill it out. I'd love to replace the studs while I'm at it tomorrow but I just know they'd create problems as they've sat in there so long. New nuts are going to have to do after a sound wire brushing and lashings of copper grease. If it doesn't pass the MOT next week there'll be tears before bedtime. It's been too long off the road. I've sorted everything it failed on last time, just hoping they don't find anything new

Best thing for getting these off - penetrating/easing oil on each nut once or twice a day for a week before even opening your toolbox.
Someone on here told me to do that, and mine all came off nicely (albeit with a bit of grunting), having presumably never been moved in the 17 years since the bike was made.

Job done. I have to say I'm exceptionally impressed with the new pipe. Bought the 400mm Oval full system directly from Black Widow, along with a set of copper rings. www.blackwidowexhausts.co.uk/xj900s-xj-900-s-diversion-4-1-exhaust-system-with-400mm-oval-stainless-steel-silencer-531-p.aspDimensions were spot on so there was no messing about bending downpipes into position. Being a 4-into-1, it is far lighter than the lump of scrap I've just pulled off the Divvy. Just one joint where the end can fixes on and a lovely fruity tone with the baffle still in place. I've left the exhaust studs in the bag but used the nuts (bought off Ebay). Even today I was tempted to replace the studs - but common sense dictated that if it's not broke don't try to fix it! Can't wait to make it fully legal so I can take the 9 out for a decent long run - it's been far too long. I'm a very, very happy bunny today

*using the nuts instead of the OE lumpy things made tightening it up a breeze too as the sockets fitted in a treat past the frame. Anyway, enough of this, I'm having some beers to celebrate a very successful week of fixing bikes

Nice job, one thing I did when replacing the nuts was to use dome nuts. They don't collect crud like open nuts do.

I'm exceptionally impressed with the new pipe. That's good to hear - I've been having thoughts of buying one for far too long. This helps me make up my mind . Does the centrestand stop actually work - that's always looked a bit odd to me, likely not to meet up with the centrestand very well?

In the end, I went for a full Motad 4 into 2 system, direct from Motad. Should arrive next week . I rather like the idea of a one-piece downpipes & collector solution, like the Black Widow one, except for the LHS of the bike being left 'naked'. The fact that I got the Motad for a little less money was purely secondary .
