Thanks to John and Andy for a good run.
It has been a while since I did a run and it was good to get back in the saddle and see some old faces and some new ones.
(Also got wet at Derby - and went on reserve less than ten miles from home!!)

Great run, and great company as usual on a Divvy run.
I managed to get as far south as Somewhere-on-the-Fosse (about level with Wellesbourne) before needing to don the full wet-weather gear - and that's on a naked bike with no weather protection apart from a bit of a screen. But the main thing is it stayed dry (and even a bit sunny!) for the run itself.
See you in the Fens?

nice one Paul, did you get a tow from the ZZR?? Pretty sure not even that could do 222mph. And damn sure mine can`t. Mind yew I did see a Viva driven like a VW hot hatch so anything is possible.

Thanks for the run guys. Sorry I had to bug out at Buxton but arrangements had been made for my afternoon.
And agree with Paul. That Viva was fair old shifting along and I winced when he overtook that Audi A5 along the lanes!!

Huge thanks to John and Andy for the run. Good to see you all again. As Dave said, it's been quite a while since we've seen some of you.
We had a great day and it was a really nice route, with some roads we know well and some we've never been on before.
Thanks again

Glad you all enjoyed the run, happy to see everybody again and sorry to those who were looking forward to Tissington ford, but after the heavy rains on Saturday the water levels were up a lot so I thought it safer to miss it out. We tried to give you a good selection of roads without speed cameras or hot Sunday tripper traffic which clog up most of Derbyshire these days, so once again great to see you, thanks for coming, thanks to Trev & Sue for doing the sweeper up job, and hopefully see you all again soon.
John & Andy.

Sorry to have to admit this chaps and chapesses but even with a wanna bee Stig behind its wheel the hammering and trying to fit in on two wheels occasionally was just too much for the ol gal and after going across off the M1 to Huntingdon , then peeling off the A1 bit , onto the A14 at the Cambridge intersection, clearly the poor old thing was overheating. I pulled into a layby and could see steam escaping and also that distinctive smell of overhot water antifreeze mix.
I used the emergency phone but it was so hard to hear and I went and told the guy it was insured with Adrian Flux, but then realised that's the Reliant ( there are quite a few to choose from.) so he said he would try Lancaster, then I got a call on my mobile and due to the advice not to sit in the car got one of the garden chairs,I use at shows, out and sat there scoffing a bag of popcorn and watching probably some of the vehicles passed, whooshing by.
I had to sit in the car to hear the fellow from Lancaster with the traffic din thereafter, and he asked if there were special issues they should know of , so I said about my ticker and was told they would get a breakdown vehicle within three quarters to an hour and let them know if not. Then the phone rang again and I was told by the breakdown guy quite ignorantly,it would be 2 hours, now I didn't mind too much when my Aprilia Atlantic 500, left me stranded and Bennets told me it might be up to two hours, but that was on a lovely sunny day down by Harwich Quay, where bikers congregate, Classic cars visit and various boats were on the water, the chap arrived in an hour and twenty minutes and was so obliging, when at least he got me home and after looking at my various bikes I gave him a fiver, and got the bits needed from Italy I fixed it and went for a long ride on it today and its fine .
Anyways the last Sunday's fellow's attitude like he said he didn't know why Bennets called him and after protesting my Heart condition again, he said don't tell me about it tell Bennets so I suggested I was telling him first and then I would tell them what a T*** he was , but in a more polite fashion. He then rang to say he would be with me in 15 minutes but needed an exact location but the Sat Nav plugged into a portable power pack showed tthe next intersection the Newmarket, Downham Market one, and then Bennetts rang to say the alternative firm they had called out was cancelled, then they rang me back later to ask if everything had gone OK so I told em nope I was still waiting. So after being put on hold yet again matey pulled in ...
After putting water in the rad he left it ten minutes ,the car restarted so he put down nothing wrong with it on the docket. Then suggested I take it easy. I actually shook the Morons hand, but in hindsight the neck may have seemed preferable, however when I went to pull away clearly it wasn't running on four pots so I managed to stop him shooting off and as Sod's law would have it she seemed to rev better.
That's allright says he , nothing wrong with that but it just wasn't pulling and dangerous trying to get out of the layby, so I stopped at a service area after a b long snail pace queue, bunged a quart of oil in,as it was at the bottom of dipstick according to Mr Helpfull -Not, low level saw that horrible tell tale sign of yellow young around the cap but the oil seemed clean as a whistle later*sic, so checked the water which seemed OK and checked all the plug HT leads, however it was still firing on less than four and once on a downhill bits would go OKish but uphill it was struggling and I got to the A12 at Ipswich ( normally take another road to Manningtree, however I came off at Suffolks Bentley Village and was struggling up the Hill in Mistley, after Manningtree and it just cried enough and stopped.
I asked a guy nearby if there was anywhere I could get some water and he went and got a watering can full from his home in the converted Maltings warehouses opposite, Over the road just opposite the station. I was parked next to( managed to roll the car backwards down the hill and into a space t'other side ) Anyways the guy it turned was an X mechanic and went through everything including finding an HT lead had burnt right through as it had sat on the manifold.
Every time we tried to restart it the water gushed out of the overflow, * but there was no visible water from the sump via the dipstick, however it didn't want to know. Bikes also got mentioned and he said they used to have a Mille but had to sell iit needing the money, his wife who kindly brought over a couple of mugs of tea, shared his passion, and after it was getting dark and raining ,offered me another drink so I had a coffee and they were going to get some food but after returning said if I needed the loo or another cuppa just knock, and even if the breakdown service couldn't fix my car and I had to leave it ,would run me home . Well my self inflicted misfortune had a real upside too.
Anyway not that I really know how much a bottle of reasonable wine was, being TT, my offer of a tenner to get some to go with their meal resulted in a no no wouldn't hear of it.
In the interim I had contacted Bennets again and shortly after the couple had returned and I was able to give them their mug back, having been informed a breakdown firm in Ipswich was called out, the guy arrived ,very soon afterwards , was quite the opposite of my earlier "friend"and had a real interest in old cars and such, as had a load of passers by during its tenure there.
So the car was on the low loader and I was back home around 23.00 , but literally when we got here my mobile rang and it was Allan from Mistleyasking if everything was OK , as they were about to offer me yet more hot drink but saw the car had gone. Like the breakdown guy who said he had 14 bikes, 2 more then than yours truly, we had swapped phone numbers and I reminded Alan that when he and Dianne were next planning to visit Harwich, to please call me and come around for some return hospitality and look at my motley car bike collection.
Alan it turned out used to work on the bigger Scimitar GTE and GTC. I have a box of Viva bits including a couple of gasket sets, and no doubt this own goal will have a certain jocular fellow doing the Gay Gordon's around his modern Vehicle at the prospect of the nemesis old car so beloved of the be kilted be sporoned one, maybe for he , deepest joy in the thundermoulds( ref Sir Stanley Unwin's commentary between songs on the excellent Small Faces Ogdon's Nutgone Flake Concept Album , released the very year my now poor ailing Viva was produced
Thanks a Million guys for the brilliant organisation you did a great job, albeit technically at 64 I am still a Rideout Virgin.

On the contrary Gav, I'm sorry to hear of your mechanical problems, hope you get the skip fixed sharpish. In fact if I lived closer I'd be round to help with the spanners. Maybe try driving it with the respect an old lady requires and stop trying to keep up with the modern formula boxes.

Thanks Bev I shall never ever say another word regarding Quwashcowcars and if my misnomenor wasn't punishment enough, for the folly, on top of getting a fixed penalty notice on my Mondeo in Ipswich last eve, in a street with a very visible sign not, after a pleasant evening celebrating my great Nephew's 21 st and forking out 50 sovs to him for his very special, day etc, the only mail this morning opened was Highlighted by Notice of Intended Prosecution, then in small print in accordance with section I of the road traffic offenders act 1988, my first reaction 100 darn the bypass on the V Raptor last week nope, I mean, or even more on the Mille a few weeks before, now I do not think even before the poor old car tried to give up the ghost expired, it could seriously do 95. Sorry only jesting, Apparently I was doing 36 at a place( nope they never heard of that fish) cod only in the Chippy I may have been returning from at the time of this serious incident, whatsoever, wherever the A61, Derby Road , Chesterfield North , near Herriot Drive is, OK it was a A fair cop guv. Perhaps I will have to do one of those speed awareness courses,ha what like the old days at Brands etc, even though I was not aware of the Viva's speed mainly due to the speedo packing up as has the temp and fuel gauge a particular source of derision from the first breakdown affable ( no way chappie) but yep guilty as charged or as now allegedly the Offence.
Other than that and having a one and only ticket before in 1991 I guess it was a fair cop guv, ere John wanna new Motor.

Only ever had 3 points in my driving/riding life (touch wood) Overtaking within the confines of a zebra crossing. I picked that up in Peterhead, a car parked just before the crossing (outside paper shop) contained 2 Policemen. They took off just as I went past, they hadn't looked to see if there was anything there before setting off but since they were now on the crossing, I had to change lanes to avoid them, they did me for overtaking them despite the fact I was avoiding their bad driving.

Still your set of King Dick Tools, should come in handy, if of course that D9 hasnt gone the way of a certain C50/70/90(whatever its pedigree-chum) in becoming a pile of Ferrous Oxide dust-seems like every which way(but loose) you have the ass ends covered(but not in rust inhibiting grey paint) to provide endless excuses for yet more failed projects. How's Wully's bike incidentally, done yet?

How's Wully's bike incidentally, done yet? I don't have any failed projects.
Wullie's bike was uneconomical for him to repair. I still have it, running like a peach with functional brakes, I might stick an exhaust on it, all it still needs, and MOT. I might just sell as is. Can't be arsed welding up the tea bag exhaust at the moment.
D9 has all the bits stripped and new bits ready to go on but I have other priorities at the moment. We're not all single and retired you know.
GS850 is awaiting the forks, I have them just not fitted them, it's a roundtuit job.
GSX1250, GP100, CB100N all in MOT'd taxed and perfect running condition. Actually that's a lie the 1250 doesn't need an MOT yet.
Only the C50 with twisted frame remains for the skip, when/if I decide to bin it.

Dont bin it, if it has a V5, may have it off you (a couple of flakes in a certain chocolate bar wrapper, should cover it, vis a vis your ascertion of a Viva's worth*sic, which would be a further incentive for me to consider trailering my Ape 125 oop tay thar Narth (as we Sooftay Surtherners refer to thar Narth of good ol Engerland), thou nose, to do the Cockymarth to Scarbro ont tiddler run. That is ont Red Rose Rotax powered water cooled stroker. After all thats why I went oop tar Nottingham (int Midlands me dook)last year to get the current one, I was gonna rob bits off to get t one in shed legally to qualify fur the pre January rule. However it has proved too good a bike, even restricted, under 14 BHP to pull about less power to risk a seizure too, with my penchant for the leaden glove/welly. If I can ever get incentivised to retrieve the original, longest ever owned one from its shed and buried situation, a transplant 125 V Twin Virago engine from the 125 Sachs may become more than a pipe dream.
ps the Harrier dinghy I went to collect from Whitby, before my accident remained on my Nieces Farm and having aquired another Sailing Cruiser( the last one more a dinghy with a cabin sunk, so its submarine qualities would have been more appropriate in Cumbria, relatives looked heaven wards in horror hearing of my latestfollytoy, decided getting a dinghy in and out of the water with changeable tides, so put it on a Classic site, and sold it sight unseen and after going there yesterday to hose it down, the buyer arrived and off it went, one less folly maybe, however he got a bargain as did yours truly, as the figure covered my trip including B&B, with a nice view of Robin Hoods Bay, where I might again stay(sod tents)and the moorland trip so at least something went right.
ps Unfortunately for me anyways, the Viva water works aren't right, so maybe the head got distorted or admitedly trying to get the head with exhaust manifold seated right was a fath and to be honest I cannot see much wrong with the previous head gasket that came of of it,but there we go t'was a home own goal.
pps I am still suffering from a paranoid conspirocy theorum that Wullie is a figment of your feverish imagination.

Post by bev on Jul 7, 2016 12:04:53 GMT
Wullie is indeed real. We have been seen in the pub on a JR at the same time. His bike had sat under a tarp for 7 years and I tried manfully to resurrect it for as little as possible given the fact you can pick them up with MOT for very little. Alas it needed tyres and exhaust which makes a cheap resurrection impossible then you have to add on all the little bits which mount up. All in it will approach the cost of an MOT'd version. Hey Ho I gave it a shot. It's running well now, two of the diaphragms in the carb had perished. I might fix the exhaust and MOT or pick up a second hand one. There's no real rush. The undertray is cracked which if you were to go the whole hog you'd replace, I bonded it. Sorry to hear the skip is still poorly, were there no locating dowels for the head ? Did you torque down in the correct tightening order ?

Thanks a Million guys for the brilliant organisation you did a great job, albeit technically at 64 I am still a Rideout Virgin.
Hrm now I think about it,doing the Essex Air Ambulance Runs are also ride outs, with casts of literally thousands, helping raise funds for a very worthwhile cause. A Great Niece had to be airlifted by the Eastern Region Helicopter, after a horse kicked her, when she was working in a stable. She had similar invasive surgery to mine after my bike fall, but they found a hairline fracture in the poor kid's pelvis, so she was using crutches when we went to celebrate her brother's 21st but yesterday was able to go see her mates in her car.( I went to their farm yesterday as a guy had bought the dinghy I brought back from Whitby sold sight unseen, apart from a picture taken in a parking area on the Yorkshire Moors.
I had a real real bargain, however decided I wasn't gonna be up to sailing a racing classic dinghy again,in the near future, (but mainly getting it in and out of the water near the sailing cruiser I keep on a river yokel lay, with the tides was the real issue so some relief someone else can make better use of it.
The guy also got a bargain and really the money covered my interesting trip, especially the guest house overlooking Robin Hoods Bay , so everyone's happy. Back up to the Suffolk Farm in a few days, just like the last time when I left the craft there ( and very much water has flowed under the proverbial bridge.
Charlotte got some good news , a place at Uni and all the folks are oft on holidays, so it is my lot, no complaints on that score ,to look after the Dog and Cat , thankfully no nags involved( and use my nieces Audi A3 during that time) then pick em up from Luton in it, Remembering Loraine Chase, did you waft in from Paradise? Nar Loowton Airport.

Thanks a Million guys for the brilliant organisation you did a great job, albeit technically at 64 I am still a Rideout Virgin. Not technically but absolutely. Rideouts with other groups don't count, especially the ones where you bowl up to look at a shiny helicopter, drink tea and talk crap.
Time you got your leg over one of these exotic Italian machines you keep mentioning and turned up. The next run isn't far from you.
