A short guide on removing old brake discs, for those who haven't tried before, & those who have tried & don't fancy ever having another go ....

Tip 1: Choose the bolt with the worse-condition head to try first. You know the one - the one you tried before, but bottled it 'cos it was getting mullered.
Tip 2: Heat. Not a bit, but a lot. If you don't smoke, find someone who does & get them to light up. The time it takes to smoke a fag isn't too long with that heat gun thrust over the disc bolt.
Tip 3 : Choose your weapon - Always an impact driver for me. I've tried regular allen keys, got nowhere .
Tip 4: Don't be gentle - whack the impact driver hard, keeping it under tension. I use my biggest hammer. If (after a few good minutes under the heat remember) it doesn't appear to want to go, change direction on the impact & give it a couple of decent whacks, then try undoing again.
Tip 5: If you haven't loosened it - keep the heat on it & sit & watch for a couple of minutes. Chances are it ain't hot enough yet. Now try again.
Tip 6 : OK - so you've loosened the first one! Congrats! Now tighten it back up again - not uber-tight like before, obviously. But tightened nice & flush to the disc.
Tip 7: Repeat for each bolt - nipping them up again once loosened. Only properly loosen them all off once you've got each one started.
Tip 8: Before fitting your new disc, make sure those seats where the new disc will sit are properly clean - any grit will mean the new disc isn't square. Even a little run-out is not good for the disc or the pads:
Tip 9: Obvious really, junk any mullered bolts & use new ones.
