" ran the bike up, fan cut in, so think it may need a thermostat................" That does show an alarming misunderstanding doesn't it .

I'm a Suzuki owner and to be fair any bike used as a commuter and left with salt on will corrode and fall to bits.
Suzuki have the reputation but my Bandit lasted well and looked good until traded in. Before the smart arses chime in it was used even during winter, maybe not as often as the everyday commuters but it wasn't wrapped in cotton wool either.

I'm a Suzuki owner and to be fair any bike used as a commuter and left with salt on will corrode and fall to bits. True, though in my experience Yamahas are a bit better finished than most other makes. When I bought my FZ6 back in '08 it was a toss-up between that and a Kawasaki Versys - the salesman helped me make up my mind by wheeling out a 2-year-old 12,000-mile Fazer, which was still pretty much mint, and a Versys with half its age and mileage, which was very definitely second-hand. My MT-03 was just over a year old when I got it, and had done 6,500 miles commuting into London. I think I may have "rescued" it just in time - a few of the fasteners were a bit furry, but a drop of ACF-50 on them got rid of that, and the rest of the bike had stood up pretty well. Time flies - I've had that bike for 3 1/2 years - must be time to move on to something else!

Yep I do think Yamahas are a bit better historically but I've seen quite a few ropey Yams out there too recently. I guess every maker is building down to a price these days. I left my 14 plate GSX1250 out in the elements for a few weeks and it needed a damn good clean with the first signs of corrosion coming through. You have to keep on top of it.

I'd agree with the Yamaha finish being very good, I never spent much time washing salt from my Diversion while couriering it and it still has most of the original engine and frame paint intact looking quite tidy after a polish - its only really the fins that showed slight signs of corrosion. In comparison to my more expensive ZRX1200R Kawasaki the finish is way better, says a lot given the Divvy was always supposed to be a 'budget' bike. I like Kawasakis they're exciting bikes but I don't consider their build quality and finish to be immense having had a few of them.

There was a post on another site. A guy brought a new CB125R from a Honda dealer. After 4 weeks it started rusting on the frame around the welds and head stock and a few other places as well. Dealer just said not their problem, and said they will touch it up with frame paint.
Other bits are rusting now also, and its only a few months old.
