First of all a huge thankyou to Martin for coming over to help me get the other engine back into the 600. It gives you so much more confidence having someone there who (apparently) knows what they are doing. In about 4 hours we had the engine in and running.
I need to drain the old oil out now which requires the exhaust to be removed as the 4-1 exhaust neatly covers the drain plug. I'll fit the one I shortened from the old engine.
Martin has a picture of the mullered spark plug presumably caused by the piston or small end smashing it when the con rod snapped.

Nice day for it, Malc . Glad to help. Martin has a picture of the mullered spark plug presumably caused by the piston or small end smashing it when the con rod snapped. Pic hasn't really captured it - but at least it shows it's proud owner :

A bit of Carbon Tetrachloride and a wire brush and that spark plug will be as good as new. Glad it's back up and running.

Bollocks! Came down this morning to find a puddle of oil on the floor. It looks like it came from the joint between the sump and the gearbox. Presumably the heating and banging to extract the rear mounting bush has damaged the gasket. Hopefully I can get it off without removing the engine

Hmm found 3 sump screws finger tight. Retighten and see what happens. I took the sump off the knackered engine and this is what I found

Concerning that a big end should go like that. Just out of interest, how many revs were you pulling at the time?

I'm not sure it is a big end yet, it could be the remains of a piston. I was doing about 6k rpm, nothing excessive only about 75mph. I've never even redlined the bike so it shouldn't be that.
I've just discovered the sump is still leaking so I'll have to remove it and reseal it.

Now on something bigger I can see no big end type bits in there.

Finally got the sump off, the old gasket off and a new one with loads of gasket sealant back on. I'll fill it up after tea and see if it leaks. There was one cap head screw right behind the sidestand bracket that is hidden in such a way that it is impossible to get an allen key into it, even a ball ended one just spins round. I ended up tapping it round with a centre punch, blasted thing.

Bugger feck and damnation it's still bloody leaking. The engine starts and runs fine but now I've git to take the exhaust off again to get to the sump. If I can't get it sorted this time I'm breaking the bike fir spares to flog in ebay.

... it's still bloody leaking..... You got a piece of plate glass you could lay the sump on, check for warping? If it's not true, you could try the other sump?

This is the other sump, both leak. Hmmm. No chance there's a bit of old gasket stuck on the underside of the motor, I suppose? That would cause the leak. Bigger tube of gasket cement called for ?

I don't think so I did clean it fairly thoroughly. I've bought some of that silicone gasket inna toob. So with the boys help tomorrow I'll be taking off the sump and using that on it in large quantities. If that doesn;t work then there will be lots of Divvy bits for sale soon.
