Hi guys need a bit of advice. Have an xj600 . When I go out on the bike if there are road works our groves in the road the bikes twitches. I have replaced the rear wheel bearings and new spindle. Replaced the steering head bearings . Put the bike on the main stand grabed the swing arm give it a good shake and no movement there. Can anyone advise wat it could be. It's a bit scary when going at speed and I hit a grove in the road the bike twitches. Regards Mel.

Isn't that normal? It can be worse if your tyres are near the limit.

Tyres at the right pressures? Makes a fair difference if they are too low.

Well, good advice and Martin should know.... Groovy Grove an' all that ;-) Quite right. Also, having ridden my xj6 with only 30 psi in the back (albeit on very soggy roads) & having an unfair share of twitches, I'm now fully reinflated & hoping for less dramas when I'm out tomorrow .

tyres i guess, mine does it when they are a bit worn and slightly squared

Some tyres are definitely more prone to this (what I call "tramlining" - shows my age!) than others, irrespective of wear. Though if the front is worn on the shoulders it will accentuate it.
I've had unpleasant experiences with Conti Road Attacks (on a D9) and Bridgestone BT21's (on the Fazer8). Interestingly the Conti Motions that I put on the Fazer to replace the Bridgestones seem to be fine. Dunlop Roadsmarts and Qualifier 2's are probably the best I've come across, followed by good ol' Pirelli Diablos.

I agree with the above. My first thing to check would be front tyre pressure and/or wear pattern. If there is any sign of scalloping off the centre line of the tyre this will cause tramlining. Although it feels awful I've never lost control or had any serious problems caused by it, but if you can't live with it you may have to buy a new front tyre. You might try running the tyre a few psi harder than recommended, but only if you feel happy having slightly less grip overall. A tyre expert will probably be along in a moment to explain why I am wrong . . .

A tyre expert will probably be along in a moment to explain why I am wrong . . . I don't need any experts - I have a wife who does that job for me.

What tyres are you guys using out of interest?, I get the same tram-lining on my Divvy 600, using Macadams both of which pretty much like new. I was putting it down to a characteristic of the bike and tyre size rather than the make so this is quite interesting.

I gotta say that it's no surprise to me that the bike twitches in road works or grooves in the road. To me that's only the tyres trying to follow the path of least resistance.
If it doesn't twitch on normal roads then Happy Days!

If it doesn't twitch on normal roads then Happy Days! I've always found it more noticeable when tyre pressures are a bit low though. Gary

Also.... Are you tense - expecting problems ? Try to relax a bit (not to the extent of letting go or anything daft like that ) and let the bike 'ride' the imperfections in the road. I used to hate the FJR moving around but that was a big old bus. Now I've got the MT I quite enjoy it's 'lively' nature !
