Hi All, just trying to find out if a removing the oil cooler and leaving it off is an option. I have the old leaky oils pipes issue and I'm told I can take off the oil filter off, remove the cooler unit and pipes and all. Then refit the oil filter straight back on the engine and I'm away. Anyone tried this? Thanks for any info.

Has been done, the earlier models don't have a cooler anyway.
Word of warning though, you need to take the adaptor off that sits behind the oil filter,(the oil pipes fasten there). When you do the retaining bolt that holds it to the block will be too long, you'll need a shorter one.

Ok, cool, thanks for the info and good heads up about the longer bolt. Do you know how badly the 600 suffers from running hot without the cooler - i'm in the uk so not often too hot weather wise - unfortunately! Thinking of welding up the holes for the pipes on the adaptor piece to get around this but its a no going back tactic eh!

Wouldn't have thought it would run too hot in our climate as I say earlier models don't have a cooler.
How bad are the pipes, a fix can be attained by cutting the bad bits out and replacing with rubber oil hose and clips.

Remember to flare out the end of the bit of pipe you leave before you fit the rubber hoses and clips. I seem to remember one space cadet having a flounce after doing this fix and it leaked. He didn't flare the pipes and the hose slipped off.

Hi, im in the UK also. I removed the oil cooler from my '96 model last year as I got a stone straight through the fins and an instant leak! And as I didnt want to spend money on a new cooler, all I did was cut the pipes on the straight section just after the first bend from the oil filter housing. The pipes are 10mm outside diameter, so I just popped to b&q (other diy stores will have them) and bought 2 10mm brass compression end stops from the plumbing department and blanked the pipes off using these. If you want you can paint the end stops or leave them brass. I painted mine so they were less obvious. No oil leaks to report since the mod.

Hi bud. I just read your post . I broke one off my cooler pipes this morning At the flexi connection. U say to blank the end of the pipes with 2 x 10mm compression fittings. Sounds good to me . The only worry I would have is the oil over heating as it has no cooler to go through. Any info on this would be verry much appreciated. Mel.

Blocking off the pipes and the oil is being pumped to a dead end..... is this good?
Wouldn't it be better to fit a loop and keep the oil flowing?

The only way your engine will overheat is if your in stationary traffic for long periods of time but that's applicable to all air cooled engines regardless of a cooler or not. You can blank them off as the oil is not directly pumped around the cooler, oil is allowed to circulate around the cooler as the temperature rises. With it blanked off, the oil circulates through the pressure relief valve built into the adapter plate. But if you prefer you could loop them together with a bit of pipe and jubilee clips.

Mines been blanked off for a year now and down around 3000 miles since. No problems to report.

A better option is to cut the metal pipes and loop them together with fluoro lined silicone hose. If you carefully cut the flex pipe ferrules you will be able to pull them off and use the existing flared ends on the oil pipes.
PS I initially used compression olive fittings on my 900 oil pipes. Fine for 5 miles then they pished oil out and would not seal whatever sealing gunk I tried.
I soldered the olives to the pipe ends to give a flare.

Is it just the bolt that needs changing or the plate as well

Is it just the bolt that needs changing or the plate as well Plate as well, if you’re removing the cooler. Otherwise just cap the pipes, or bypass the cooler with some hose,, for the simpler solution.
