Done the mod on the oil drive thingy and got a really nice tight fit with a cut/filed down bolt shaft. put it all back together and it still rattled on tickover (and went away on higher revs), took it back apart and noticed the large nut holding the alternator drive gear wheel was loose and only held in place by the folded tab washer. The nut is at approx top right as you look into the side of the engine. tightened the nut a quarter turn refolded the tab washer over put it back together and bingo, lovely quiet engine now, I,m chuffed. worth checking if you done the usual mod and it didn't work first time.

Thank you - I'll take a look at mine when I get a chance - it rattles like a rattling rattly rattler at the moment.

Mine is more rattley than yours, nya, nya! I tried the pin thing to no avail. I didn't see anything loose but there seems to be a bit of play on the oil pump drive. The other problem is I tried to change the oil but the new exhaust covers up part of the sump plug and some ham fisted ape seems to have done up the plug. Luckily having the clutch cover off I could pour the oil out of the side of the gearbox.

Once it's off and tightened properly it won't be a problem again.

Unless they did it up the first time! Get a stamped flat plate spanner with a hex end then don't forget the sump unscrews down. Its all too easy to pull the spanner the wrong way. Granny & eggs mode - Working from the RHS of the bike the spanner end has to go backwards.

Granny & eggs mode - Working from the RHS of the bike the spanner end has to go backwards. Yes I know that thanks. The nut is in a pretty parlous state. An open ended spanner wont grip it. I need a cranked hexagonal 17mm ring spanner (not a 12 point like most are)with one side ground down to get inbetween the pipe and the nut. A normal ring and open ended won't do as the ring is at an angle to the shaft of the spanner and sits in exactly the wrong plane.

I had the very same problem with mine after sorting the pin out but luckily noticed the large nut holding the alternator drive gear wheel was loose before i put it all back together again, the bike sounds great now.

They aren't the cheapest but I've not had any problems with them and they know me well by now so I have a pretty good relationship with them. Don't get them to change a tyre though it's cheaper elsewhere. Tredworth Motorcycles are supposed to be good but I've had a few problems with them, like leaving a loose jet in a carb float bowl once and when I took a bike in with a half full tank I got it back with barely enough to reach the petrol station. I wouldn't trust the Yamaha dealer in Cheltenham (Skellerns) as far as I could throw them. Pitville Motorcycles are ok though. Malc

Cheers Malc
I have been told that mantra motorbikes are ok kinda heard good and bad about them. Hypermoto are terrible would never use again. Everywhere is around £40 an hour I'm thinking that seems EXTREAMLY high maybe for a dealership to charge that but not a garage

They can charge up to about £90 an hour for labour! £40 is a little on the high side, but isn't far off the norm for an independent repair agent in my experience. Gary

Yep same as mine, not sure if I described it correct as the alternator drive gear wheel but if you follow the alternator in a line to where you are working on the clutch side of the bike that's what it looks like lol. There was 10-20mm free play in the gear wheel reduced to near nil when I tightened the nut just a quarter turn then refolded the tab washer over. made a massive difference.

In the light of recent events, I guess Rowlf was probably just playing safe. Panic - there's always anutter way to sort out the rattle:
