Hi,
I've just bought my W reg XJ600 N and it came with a few problems which are perfectly solvable (lack of power, some cosmetics, cracked tyres). I have been reading about de-restricting for the past few hours and will attempt to locate the plastic bits in the carb.
There is something funny happening to my revcounter, though. It shows zero for 2 sec, then it goes to 3000rpm for two sec and then to the actual revs for two sec. I spoke to a mechanic today and he suggested that it might be a fault code since the whole jumping from zero to three and then to actual revs happens in sequence over and over.
Has anybody seen this happen before? Is this some sort of an unsophisticated early computers which shows the fault code on the revcounter?
any ideas appreciated, Mariusz

Thanks for that! I found the TPS and followed the instructions in the thread you gave me teejayexc but after disconnecting the TPS and switching the ignition ON it shows 0rpm and turns to 3000rpm, then back to 0 and on to 3000 and so on....even when I stick the TPS back on with the ignition on nothing changes. Any ideas?
If it is a code where can I find a full list of those codes for my divvy???

The ignition system wont correctly without the TPS - hence the annoying warning. Its probably faulty wiring to the TPS. Sort out the connectors and try setting it up as TJ said.

The 900 has a similar fault diagnostic system, but with different rev indication - here is the relevant page from the D900 manuel:- Perhaps someone will have a look at a 600 manuel and see if there is an equivalent section in it? Cheers, Simon

Had something similar with my 01 divvy. Ignition on, press button nothing but rev needle went up to about 2k ish. Turned out to be corroded wires in the ignition circuit.

I now have the technical manual from Yamaha and 3000 is the mark for a TPS fault. The tacho reading for setting TPS is 5000 for the XJ600S/N (1996 on)

Thanks a lot for that! Had it checked as it is indeed the TPS. There is electricity going in but no signal coming out. Anybody knows where I can buy a TPS?
Thanks

Check all the wiring (notorious for corrosion) before you replace the part.

Just checked the TPS on my XJ900S, followed the procedure, when I reconnected the plug the tacho wasn't moving from 0, so I undone the two screws, tried turning the body of the TPS both ways but no movement from 0 on the tacho. Any clues??

Following on from my last post, I went out today and metered the TPS wiring, as I still cant get it do what the TPS set up pages say.
Firstly I checked for continuity from each of the wires in the TPS plug to the respective wires in the CDI plug. (Yellow and Blue) Just to rule out dodgy wiring/terminals etc.
With the TPS plugged in, I have 4.9volts on the blue wire, and from 0volts to 0.49volts on the yellow wire as I moved the TPS sensor on its fixing screws.
However, when I unplug the TPS, I then get 4.82volts on the yellow wire.
Can anyone shed any light on if/what im doing wrong?
Pretty please??
