My D9 has been getting more and more difficult to start lately which I put down to the ever increasing cold weather but this morning she just wouldn't have it at all. She fired and would run (sort of) and revved between tickover and 2000 revs without me moving the throttle with the rev counter needle flicking to the 9000 rev mark at times (is the some error code? ) but wouldn't continue running or pick up at all if I released the starter button. Any ideas?

Any ideas? is'nt the rev counter swinging to 9k means there is an ignition problem?

0 rpm - 3 secs 10k rpm - 2.5 secs Normal - 3 secs Repeat
If the rev counter does this then it's the throttle position sensor (from the Service manual). I can't easily find anything in there about 9k rpm.

I am sure I remember similar faults being battery related, although I think Sean ruled this out.
Good Luck

Hi John - yes had the same problem started about two months ago doing it every now and then...say once a week....
trying to start but not - switch it off and on a few times and eventualy started on the button! ? !
Turns out the code means either a throttle position sensor problem or an ignition problem thanks to member here who posted as you have read.
The baterry seems Ok although not tested it - it seems to have enough juice or it would have died by now.
So I basically stripped the bike of its fairings and panels, tank and airbox etc and cleaned out every connector block in the wiring I could find. I also sprayed up the ignition switch as it could be from there - give it a good soaking in WD40- side stand switch the lot!
Seemed to cure it but have had two moments since where it is showing the same signs of not starting but it is not throwing the tacho up around to 9,000 at all....! MMMMMmmm?
Thinking a 12 year old bike going through 5 winters and 1005, 000 miles might need a little TLC on the electrics by now....
I think the next avenue for me to explore is the starter motor bushes possibly being worn....
If I find the permanent cure/culprit I will let you know....
regards
Sean
