Next to the oil drain plug underneath the engine there is what seems like an oval cover about 2 inches by 1 inch.Mine has a bolt missing. Any idea what it is.I cant find it in Haynes.

Found it in Haynes, section 2.20.Picture 16.2.It appears to have no bolt in the right side anyway.Still don't know what it is though.I put a bolt in,look like having to take it out again.

Flymo, you're right. Chapter 8 in Haynes manual. There is a piccy, 14.3. You should have a cable coming from it too sindento. Oh yes, two bolts as well.

Just had a good look with the torch and mirror, and of course you are right with the oil level switch. Thanks a lot. I like to know what's what.Took me 10 minutes to find the choke at first, says it's on the left side of the handlebar, nothing about it lurking down by the carbs, must be an early model.

A lot changed to the models from 1995 on...... Bodywork and windshield (on the S) Choke lever Oil cooler Electric fuel pump Throttle position switch Electric carb heaters Twin front discs Hazard warning lights less important were stanchion protectors and fork drain plugs removed. My '97 N was caught just before the extra front disc was added but has all the other mods. Can't win them all.

I had the interim facelifted model around '97 that had the new plastics but only the one front brake. As with the 900, I was happy with the braking power if not its controllability**. I dont know if the twin discs were much of an improvement over the single disc. From what folks say - suspect not much difference apart from the looks.
** fitted a full blue spots system to the 900. Amorti has fitted a 1/2" master cyl to the 600 and says he gets better braking control than the standard (larger) master cylinder.

Unladen then I think the single brake is up to the job. Stick the camping gear or a lardy pillon on and -ooh- do things get hairy!

All you can do is fit some sintered pads. The last set on my 900 lasted 15K. The previous standard type did 5K!!! So even allowing for a faster disc wear the sintered pads are cheaper and stop better. Failing that you could "trade up" to a 900.
