Have a '99 D600 23,000 miles on the clock and have just started having problems getting my key to turn in the ignition. My spare key wont turn at all and my usual key turns with a lot of wiggling it about. its ok in the park position but not when trying to to turn it to on. Have tried spraying keys/ignition with oil to no avail. Can anyone advise what the problem is and how I can fix it

Its could be the lock barrel thats worn. Having lots of loose keys hanging from the ignition key increases the wear rate inside the lock. It also might have been attacked by some git with a screwdriver.
It might also be the action of the park setting thats sticking through under-use. See if you can get WD40 into the switch mechanism below rather than the lock itself.

Seems to be a known problem on Yams, at least ones of this generation. When the lock barrel wears you have to push the head of the key forward before it will turn easily.
Lubricating the mechanism helps - I've heard silicon spray lube recommended.

I read an old thread on this and I do believe it was Bob again what said pushe the key forward, it works for me every time and I even got the steering lock to work after the bike being parked without it a couple of weeks! ;D

Would you have done that before your classes [/quote] Yes its kinda the obvious thing to try but I did contemplate changing the barrel which I wouldnt have dreamed of before the classes ;D

I dont bother with steering locks ever since some b'stard broke mine trying to steal the bike even though it was locked to a post! A fat chain and decent padlock are (should be) more deterrant than the sterring lock.

Yes, but it's better than nowt if you're just doing a Cameron and popping into the shop.
