Hi All,
I have a 1993 'L' XJ600S Diversion. I notice that if I change into 6th at about 40mph, there is a lot of whining noise coming from the gearbox under load, closing the throttle makes the whining go. Whining it not present in any other gear apart from 6th.
Question: Is this normal for a 600?
Thanks in advance.

You need the fix-it kit... I don't know if mine does that, I think 40 is too low for 6th anyway, the chain and gearbox get clattery about that, but mine is geared taller, too.

Any chance of a sensible answer at all?

The sensible answer would be check you've got the right level of oil in it. The type of oil could also have an effect as could the time between changes.
Most gearboxes will whine a bit if used incorrectly and I don't think 6th at 40 is the gear I'd be in. A 600 rider might confirm that though. I certainly wouldn't be in 5th on the D9 bimbling through town. If you open the throttle and ride it a little faster does the whine go away? If so I'd guess you should be in a lower gear.

does the whining go away at say 50 /55 coz i dont use top gear for anything lower than that and i find it whines anyway if your in the wrong gear for the job ( you can alos feel it through the bike and obv the revs). anyway being productive:
you sure its gearbox? check oil (not just level what type have you got in there and what nasty additives ). check your clutch cables not getting snagged therefore not engaging properly incase the whining your getting is due to clutch not quite engaging hence going away when not under load. just a thought.
good luck.

Worth checking chain tension too while you're at it. Make sure there is still perceptible slack when the bike's loaded up (easiest if you get a mate to sit on it while you check)
