failed my first one in 1976, but passed a few weeks later with a better examiner 
First examiner was a notorious woman who failed more than she passed
and asked me to do my u turn halfway down a bridge over the river leven.It wasn't very wide and I was that busy watching for traffic flying over the brow of the hill I went up on the pavement on the other side. I had long hair then and I could tell from the look on her face when I turned up for the test that she would take great pleasure in failing me
