Hi All Our poor XJ (N, 1995) has appalling fuel consumption at the mo, she used to be up around 60, but is now worse than the car So I read the article about TPS and decided to have a go...now I have lots of questions!!! I'm pretty sure I have successfully located the TPS ;D I'm not sure which connector to disconnect...is it the one in a rubber shoe (this one wont come off, don't know if this is because the wire has no give as it's cable tied to the TPS...don't want to force it...) or is it the other two wires which are connected via spade connectors??? Also not sure which 'screws' to disconnect at the next stage if neccessary...the TPS seems to be attached to the carbs by allen bolts...but there are also two screws attaching what appears to be a metal rod to the TPS at one end, and the right hand carb at the other...is it these? (I can imagine that you would need a special screwdriver for this, as it would need to be pretty long! The other things I cannot imagine needing anything special, and not a screwdriver at that!) To further confuse things...when I look at (what I think is) the TPS from the RIGHT side of the bike, I can see a hole with a thread inside...which looks like I may even have a bolt missing I'm sure I really need some pics to explain what I'm on about, but I figured someone experienced in these things may just understand me *lol* Having not the faintest idea what I'm doing I don't want to break anything!!! Any help gratefully received!!! Mel

pinched from previous post, teejayee author, not me ok !! Hi it could be the TPS (Throttle Position Sensor) First the Diversion 600 if the model has one and the 900 which all do. First of all this is a very simple job to do even for the none mechanically minded. On the left hand end of the bank of carbs you will see a black cylindrical object with a connector coming out of it. With the ignition switched OFF disconnect the connector. Then switch the ignition ON (do not start the bike) and you will see the rev counter shoot round to 10,00rpm then back to zero this is normal. It`s just telling you that the TPS isn`t connected. While the ignition is switched ON reconnect the TPS connector you are now in the TPS diagnostic mode and the reading on the rev counter should be 5,000 to 5,5000. If it is 0 or 10,000 you will need a special screw driver to undo the screws that hold the TPS onto the carbs. Just slacken them and turn the TPS slightly one way or the other to get the correct reading. When you tighten them back up make sure the reading dosn`t go out. When you are satisfied that the reading is correct just switch the ignition off and you will leave diag mode and be back to normal. That`s it you have just checked and adjusted if needed the TPS. hth

Greetings exactly as Billy (& TJ) have said its on the left of the bike in front of your left knee as you sat on the bike the screws are star shaped with an extra bit in the middle but they may have been changed for allen head screws the sensor connector block should just pull of with a bit of a wiggle it should be covered by a black soft plastic cover Max......

It's definately, definately on the left (nearside) of the bike. I checked mine recently and that was where I found it and my bike's a 600S.

Perhaps your bike is the early Divvy engine version which did not have a TPS fitted. If you have one it will be fitted to the side of carb 1 on the left. That isn't a TPS.

ok this pic above is of a 600 (99 model) and you can see the TPS just under the frame rail with the black loop of wire going to it, above the alternator(the silver round thing) and below is a close up of it and this is her early 600( a 93 model i believe) and i cant see a TPS so would go with Padster that the early models didn't have one fitted Max........

Yep they're right, the TPS didn't come along until 96 (facelift model, fairing change and oil cooler, and other bits and bobs). I've been getting poor consumption out of my D6 (95 model). I used to get 150 miles to reserve but now only getting 125-135 miles. It's just gone in for service though - had carbs cleaned and balanced, which were a bit out and valve clearances done amongst other things. Just waiting to get it back to find out if it improves consumption - just awaiting luggage rack repairs. I used to get 180miles to reserve on my first D6 which was a late 97 model, but then I do give this second one some welly

My D6 had poor fuel consumption and poor cold starting. My bro bought it, sorted out the TPS and is now getting around 60mpg. He still has the flat spot just above tickover, which affects starting, but not as badly as when I had the bike.

hi there. ive tried the fault diagnostics procedure using the TPS, when the TPS is disconnected I get a 2K rpm reading, when i reconnect it I get a 5k rpm reading. I get a strong engine turnover but no spark at my plugs at all. ive got new spark plugs, new HTC cables, new ignitor unit and new coil relays yet nothing seems to be working. I'm racking my brains now lol any help would be grand. Cheers :-)
