Had a similar issue on my D6. Probably blue wire syndrome in my case but with the lights on the battery would drain faster than it charged.
I found that the engine would stop turning, requiring a bump start, before it reached the point where the plugs wouldn't spark and it wouldn't even bump start.

Ok now I'm starting to get cheesed off. Replaced battery, bike started fine. Ran it around a couple of days last week to work n back and all good. This morning after weekend in garage it won't start. Put optimate on battery and six hours later it starts on the button. Any one got any ideas? It seems like current leaking somewhere but nothing is on when key out

Got to be rectifier, alternator related, as it should be keeping a steady charge.I just had a quick Google and one other fault could be that the earth from the CDI is drawing off current, but then I am no electrician , you could also try taking the LT leads off the coils one by one and see if the engine drops from 4 to 3 pots running.
Maybe I am just clutching at straws but understand how cheesesed off you must be.

Disconnect the rectifier/regulator output wire. Resistance to earth should be very high/infinite. If it's showing a reading there's a problem with the reg/rec. a cheap voltmeter on the handlebars wired to the ignition live will tell you what's going on as you ride.

Put the multimeter leads across the battery. Should read about 12.7v with everything off. Start the engine. Charge rate should go up to a max of about 14.5v. if it doesn't go up at all, the reg/rec is probably toast, although I wouldn't discount a short in the connector(s) caused by corrosion. Alternator failure is relatively rare by comparison.

Thanks for replies. CD please can you explain the resistance to earth a bit more not quite understanding what you mean. Voltage is approx 14.5 with engine running

Still no further with this replaced battery and regulator but still won't start. Cranks over fine just won't fire
