After working til the wee hours putting my cylinder head back on as I was having surgery on my hand the next day, I found a couple of bits left over! Grrr.
One was a guide pin from a camshaft bearing cap, but i also found a ball bearing on top of the gearbox under the can chain tensioner. The tensioner springs were removed, so did it come from in there? It makes sense but I can't find an exploded diagram to say where it would go? Thanks.

Hi
I can't solve the mystery but I have a XJ600 spares catalog with lots of very detailed exploded diagrams in it. It is in PDF format (1.4mb). If you think that is any help 'pm' me your email address and I will send it to you. It is for the naked version but apart from the fairing is identical mechanically.

Indeed it is the same. Sorry I could not be of more help.
I do have a genuine Yamaha service (Paper) and had a quick look in that but is is less detailed than the spares book.
Looks like it will remain a mystery for now. Hopefully someone here will know though, they are a knowledgeable lot !
