Hi All I'm a Newbie on here. I have an xj600s Divvy 1992 with 29,900 miles on the clock. There is a knocking noise that has gradually got worse over the 2 years I've had the xj, When you start the bike up on tick over you can hear the noise if you increase the revs the noise goes away or if you turn the tick over screw up it goes away again. On tick over it makes the noise and when you pull the clutch in it goes away slightly, I've checked the small dowel on the back of the clutch basket, and that's OK not worn away at all. Has anyone come across this?? need help please. Thanking you Paul

It does just sound like the so-called clutch noise, which I personally think is a combination of the clutch and the transmission gears rattling around when there's no load on them.
The fact that it goes away when you speed up the tickover tells me it's probably nothing too serious. I wonder if the fact that it has gradually got worse is due to the tickover getting lumpier as the carbs go out of synch over time? Obviously other things like the condition of the spark plugs can also affect the lumpiness of the tickover.
It's been said before, but if you think your bike's got a rattly tickover go and listen to a dry-clutch Ducati sometime!

There are instructions for a fix the clutch rattle in the tech section and one of these will sort the carbs balance. www.twinmax.co.uk/
