Hello everyone, so I just bought my first div, after passing for the examn, i chose a div 600 because it was cheap and has great reviews all over the web. After riding it for a few weeks, it woulden't start. The starter motor just goes round and round. I can start it by running next to the motor and let the clutch go. I took the starter motor off and on the picture you can see why it won't start. My knowledge about motors isen't all that great, would it be difficult to fix? If so, does anybody know what I would be paying if I let a motorshop fix it? If it is worth it or not, because I know the engine has to come off Allright thanks for your time, Mark Attachments:

It's not good news. Probably cheaper to source a new engine. Apart from the fact the starter gear appears gubbed you have to wonder where the missing teeth went to. Not to mention did this engine ever have an oil change.

The oil was changed before i bought it, it looks very clean, plus a new oil filter and battery.
I read that the starter clutches on these early diversion models are known for failing. The bike has around 14000 km on the odo. Would I be better of buying a '98 model or would I run into the same problem again?

14,000km is not much to see this kind of damage, is it genuine. If you buy a newer model engine I think it has some differences, oil cooler etc.
Hopefully a 600 fan will be along soon.

The seller could have left the old oil in there for years and just changed it for selling the bike.
I would go with a newer bike and sell the old one as parts. Age can be more destructive than mileage even on a well serviced bike.

Thank you,
maybe that I will go for the '98er then, as there are a lot for sale over here.
I see that you have a '97 div. Did you have any (big) issues with the bike, would you recommend it? I don't want to have the same problem again, when I get the newer div.

I had a '97 600 and took it from 800 miles to 13000 in a year. It was replaced with the 900 in 2007 and I'm still using that one. The 600 initially had some running problems due to congealed fuel in the carbs but was otherwise great. It never had the milky oil problem but rarely did short runs. The 900 just keeps on going. Typical problems for both are on the forum.
