I have a 1998 600 Diversion which is making an annoying ticking noise. This is most noticeable at startup and then fades away quite quickly as the engine warms which made me think it was the exhaust blowing somewhere. (Not had the bike long) But today when I got to work I could still hear a definite (quiet) tick, tick, tick. Any ideas anyone?
I have read on here that it could be possibly be the camchain tensioner sticking and to slacken and re-tighten the nut. Is this the centre nut of the tensioner?

Mine does that.
I think on mine it is a minute leakage where the no2 downpipe goes into the front of the engine, which closes with heat expansion.
If you do the screwdriver stethoscope thing you can't hear it inside the engine, but if you try to feel the leak at the downpipe you burn your fingers.

My 600N makes much more noise at start up including the clutch. Once the engine gets warm and the oil gets everywhere the noises mostly disappear. My advice is not to touch the camchain tensioner unless you know that's the source of the ticking and the camchain is beyond adjustment. I found that the chain adjusted itself anyway. Also there's no record of Divvies needing the chain replaced either inside 50k miles. (I wait to be contradicted on that and would even go as far as saying few have had to change the camchain anyway.) My thoughts would be more on valve shims if it's a constant ticking? Just my thoughts... Last possibility might be your ears, listening too much...heh, heh! ;D OK, a wee joke!

Unless its clattering, valve are fine when they are ticking away. Start to worry when they go quiet.

First fill the oil to the max line. If that doesn't quiet it, undo the two retaining bolts on the tensioner a quarter turn at a time one after the other, til it clicks. Then tighten it up.
They are basically just noisy engines though.
