Was checking the oil on my Divvy 600 S (98) at the weekend and realised it needed a lot more than I was expecting the inspection glass was dark when it was on the centre stand so I assumed the oil was fine.
Dropped some new oil in and the visor became visible again through the new oil so I'm guessing it was pretty low on oil.
From reading the bike owners manual I know the bike is supposed to hold 3.8 Litres of oil and that's how much I will put in when I do a full oil filter and oil flush in the next couple of weeks but it left me wondering
How do you know you have the right amount of oil in the engine without the usefulness of a dip stick like you do on a car?
Any knowledgeable input greatly welcomed.

The oil system traps some oil. Put in 3 litres and top up carefully from there. Run the engine & see if the level drops.
BTW, an oil flush is only needed if you think the old oil was contaminated and wont cure the dirty sight glass.

Well the oil in the system currently is from the previous owner. I feel it's always worth giving an engine new oil and filter when you don't know when it was last done. Is there nothing else you can look at say looking down where you pour the oil to gauge how much is in there?
I think the glass was dark due to dreggs of old oil so I'm really hopeful to get the oil changed ASAP

By all means change the oil but a flush isnt needed unless the oil is contaminated. If it is contaminated you really shouldn't use the bike.
Oil glasses will get dirty if the oil is in for too long. Unfortunately the glass often doesn't self clean. I've checked my Yamaha manual but it doesn't say how to remove the oil sight glass.

Ah I think I know what I've said wrong I don't mean actually flush the oil just an oil change. Sorry for that. The glass is clean as it was see through for a while when I put the new oil in just became dark after the new and old oil mixed hence I want to drain the old oil put on a new filter and put in fresh oil. Cheers CD much appreciated on the input.

as for oil level.... at the sight glass, just to the right, there are two marks,on the case, just short of the top and bottom of the sight glass, this is the min and max levels. check when on level ground The 600 is best kept to the top half to full at all times, as sometimes if low, the oil light can flash at you on start up, or when cranked over
