Has anyone managed to change the front fork seals on a 1995 XJ600 without dissembling the whole fork leg? Can the dust and oil seals be prised out of the lower leg whilst the inner (shiney) tube is still in place, and a replacement slid down from the top? It seems a pain to have to prat around stripping the whole leg if there is a workable shortcut.
Thanks
Darryl

I haven't tried without dissembling the whole fork leg. From experience, I've always found it takes some effort to separate the uppers & lowers because of the resistance of the seals, so I think it'd be fairly tricky digging-out the old seals in the way you suggest - though I've heard tell (maybe here??) that they can be removed by screwing into them & using grips to grab the screw head & wiggle 'em out.

Never tried it without disassembly because it's an ideal opportunity to inspect and check them. If you're anywhere near Bath I've built myself a set of proper tools for the job and you'd be welcome to borrow them

Thanks everyone. Looks like I'll settle for stripping them down. Thanks for the offer of tools astaroth, but I live in Lancashire - a bit far away. I'll try to make my own. Do you know of any diagrams which might help? Does the nut on the holding rod need to be 22mm across the flats?
Thanks

It's 24mm across flats, which is M16 although if you're making your own, go very slightly smaller cause that makes it easier to engage. Basically what you need an M16 nut welded on the end of a metal bar about 500mm long.
