xj600 1993 starting problems

Hi im new hear ,
ive bought a xj600 for my first big bike and i was told it just needed petrol so i put petrol in and it didnt start
so i checked the plugs and they are fine
i cleaned the carb and they seem to be ok now
seems to start when spray carb cleaner into inlet
not sure how to check the float levbels ect.. please help

Clean the carbs and fuel tank and try again with a tankful of posh petrol from Shell.

Its probably old petrol that's gone off and gunked it up.
