In the last five years I've pondered the same about my '97 600N but no-one has come up with a definitive answer! Haynes has no recommendations as far as I can see either. 40,000k (miles) I vaguely remember but from who....... My bike is just on 75K kilometers (50K miles roughly) and I think all I need a valve shim check. [aside: Trouble here is a lot of the knowledgeable D6 folk have moved on to newer, different bikes and never got to that magic transformation point I think.] There are some D9 owners who seem to keep their bikes longer so maybe a little bit of info there might help.......anyone.... So in the dark rules!

my '95 D6 has done 36K miles and when I opened it up to do the shims the cam chain was like new, so a lot more than 36K certainly

my 95 D6 did almost double Astaroth's mileage before being laid up for so long that it became uneconomic to put it back on the road. I will check the mileage at some point, but it was around 70K.

My 900 has 64K on the original cam chain.
