1995 - XJ600S Usual rattly clutch. Clunks when changing gears. Worse when changing up but less clunky when changing down. Does this mean that there is a problem with the gearbox/clutch or am I doing something wrong. Any tips would be welcome from more experienced divvy riders.

check the clutch adjustment, and how long since your last oil change ? chain tension can have an effect aswell.

Just changed the oil and filter. The clutch seems to disengage (put it in gear and with the clutch in, the bike doesn't try to creep forward and the engine doesn't strain). The chain doesn't feel tight but I'll give it another check. Is there a particular procedure for adjusting the clutch as it seems to have adjustment at the engine and lever?

Take the clutch cable off and check for slack in the clutch shaft bearings at the engine end.

Hi Darryl, I have a been experiencing similar problems, very heavy and noisy gear shifting. I don't want to alarm you because it may not be happening for the same reason but on mine (2001) it seems to have got worse just this week and changing down seems stiff as if it was grating on something and I am having to use a lot more pressure to engage the gears on the downshift. Its a bit worrying, I haven't had her long but I like the old girl. If it can't be solved easily I'll have to put her into the shop. I'll be keeping an eye on the replies with a bit of luck someone has already solved this problem.
Best of luck, Mal

Also check the gearbox bearing behind the front chain sprocket.
If downshifts engage better when you blip the throttle to match revs its likely to be the clutch dragging.

If you give an approximate location there may be an "expert" member near you who could offer advice.

Best of luck, Mal I don't want to worry you but the dreaded clutch bearing disintegration thing that Diversions do could be happening to you! If it is then the rollers are in the process of falling apart and chewing up the cage (and worse). There'll be a bang and selecting a gear will be really hard. Obviously I could be wrong but the symptoms are there. My old 2001 did it at least 4 times - hence someone else now has it. Grum.

Its a quick job to whip off the clutch cover and have a look. Use the side stand and no need to drain the oil. But use 6 point sockets on those screws anything else will fubar the heads.

Seems much better now. Clutch shaft bearings seem OK - not much slack. Adjusted the cable to 2mm play at the lever end. Smoother changes when I allow revs to drop after declutching but before changing up/down. No clunking if I change up at around 2-3000rpm. Having said that, I've just road tested the bike anfd the rear brake feels weaker that usual. Possibly one half of the caliper sticking. Thanks everyone for the interest and tips.

Any slack in the clutch operating lever bearings is bad news. They are needle bearings & soon fall apart when worn enough to go slack. Cha.gong up at 2000 to 3000 is seriously slogging the engine. Should be using a lot more revs to protect the big ends.

I agree with CD - normally you'd want to do up changes (apart maybe from 1st to 2nd) at 4-6,000.
I've always found clunky Yamaha boxes (that'll be most of them, then) respond well to "semi-clutchless" up-changes, i.e. just fan the clutch to the bite point), which just gives the revs enough time to drop to the synchronised speed but no further.
