Yes tonight I have been an utter tool, after a stressful couple of weeks and an especially stressful day, I was challenged at a set of lights by a group of chavs who started to shout sexist and degrading things at me. Normally I would let it go, but tonight it got at me and when the lights changed I accelerated hard on the bike away from them. On slowing down further down the road, the bike started spluttering like it was running empty on fuel, then made two loud knocks. I pulled over to check it over and couldn't really see anything with it being dark, however I am pretty sure there was no smoke coming out of the exhaust. I decided to head straight back home and the bike felt hesitant and raspy. After a long internal rant at myself for doing such a stupid thing, I am worried I have done some damage. Only thing I can do is check it over in the morning as I can't see a thing right now. Any suggestions on what it could be or how serious it might be?

Did you run a chav over? Maybe some burberry has been caught in the wheel... Sorry, not much help.... although I would check the exhaust connections

I would not have thought you could have done any damage just by legging it off a bit quick unless something was already on the way out. I had a similar problem with my Fazer it was carp/water in fuel line only noticed it when I gave it some wellie then I knew it was there & found it more often . I drained the carbs replaced the fuel filter reset the TPS & all fine again this would be the first things I would check as they are easy & cheap. Neil

Unless you bounced it mercilessly off the rev limiter it is unlikely to be anything you've done. I like both the ideas above, as Divvys suffer both. I once drained the last litre or so out of my fuel tank, it had about 1/3 water in it. Seems the drain tubes get kinked quite easily. Being the miser I am, I actually scooped the usable petrol back off the top of the container ;D

First things first:
were you out of sight of the chavs before the bike conked?

I never came across anything that acted like a rev limiter but I have had bowel-moving disappearances of any form of power right at the wrong moments (on my old bike I hasten to add). Grum.

Right first of all sorry for not updating this thread. My laptop went caput not long after and with being away on holiday I haven't been able to sort it.
Regarding the bike though....it looks like sh*t had got into the carbs. Went a local bike shop and said I needed something to flush it and they gave me some solution to add to the fuel, kind of like Motul Fuel System Clean, but it was a different brand and the name is slipping me by at the moment.
Anyway I was expecting miracles as the bike was running like a pig, but after just 5 miles it was running sweet as a nut! It was heaven! So now I've got the bike shop looking into a tank flushing system as the one they used to order in as been deemed no good due to the number of additives in modern fuel. Apparently it neutralizes it.
That photo of the fuel being drained is a bit mental! I didn't think they could harbour that much water at the bottom of the tank! Might be worth draining completely before refueling again.
Thanks for your help though guys.

If you had just lovingly washed the bike with gallons of water or left it out in pouring rain it might be water in the tank. Otherwise its unlikely. But its easy to check - just pull of the fuel pipe and drain some into a glass jar.

Thanks for your help though guys. It's just as likely that it's water which got into your tank too, and they added (something based on) meths, which causes the water to dissolve in fuel, then your bike will run fine as soon as you get through whatever is in the fuel pump and carb bowls.
